GREASEMONKEY I had everything but the springs & mounts already hanging around my shop.
The cargo box is removable to be used on my hard top, and I can slap a small piece of marine plywood on the trailer to use if need be. It will eventually get an adjustable tongue & removable rack for 2 kayaks or 2 canoes.
Gonna be my multi tool trailer.

sorry if this is the wrong thread for this post. This is absolutely the first time I have ever been on any kind of forum and first time I have ever even thought of posting something.
With starting out in either obtaining or building an off-road trailer, I’d suggest that you determine where that you want to go with it and therefore what do want to carry?

In my case, I wanted to improve camping, as for the wife and I, previously living out of a two-door Jeep on extended camping trips was just tight, plus I was getting tired of sleeping on the ground vs. what I have now is a roof top tent on the trailer. Plus, my trailer is always 95% ready to go camping as it's a storage box on wheels...

Which brings me to the issue of weight and keeping it simple. I think a lot of tricked out trailers with for example slide out kitchens, although nice I'm sure, are just too heavy, especially with my Jeep. (Unless one is going to tow it out to the desert to stay for a week.) With my trailer, I want to be able to safely tow it at 70 mph across multiple states, take it off-road and not have the trailer feel like unstable or dead weight behind my lifted, short wheel based Jeep, and if I have to, easily be able to unhook it and spin it around on a trail (which I've done), plus be able to quickly move to a new location (it takes me about eight minutes to close up the RTT... try that with a ground tent). I’ve towed it a few places that people don’t typically take trailers, but there are places I won’t take my trailer like shelf roads and tight switchbacks.

I’ll also note that I have removed gear from it, that I thought would be nice to have, but frankly, I just wasn’t using it, so why carry it? Plus, be sure to consider having trailer brakes.

I'd like to get some feedback from the group regarding offroad camper trailers. Been looking at all the builds and also been going to camper shows/exhibits, etc. Most on the market are just regular popups with a lift kit, not well built. Home built look great and sturdy. Are people interested in what they build in Australia, the hard core, well built, handle anything you can throw at it type of camper trailer where the whole family can come along for the adventure?

bonofied suiter Here are some photos of my M416 Trailer behind our 2003 Jeep Wrangler TJ called the Whoo-Hoobicon. I've been working on this project off and on for a couple of years and consider it mostly done except for perhaps a lid with cargo rack that can easily come off when not needed.

The base trailer is a 1960's M416. I've customized to be a general utility expedition trailer. Special features include a Lock-N-Roll Hitch on a telescopic draw bar. Telescopic landing leg with caster. Tool Box with Optima Deep Cycle Battery, External power and charging ports, Voltage readout, External water line connections to 4-GPM pump for outdoor shower, 400-Watt Inverter, and internal tool box lighting. Trailer has been converted to all LED lighting including converting the original military tail lamps to LED, Rock Lights under the tub, LED Flood Backup light. LED strip tail lamp with guard, custom rear bumper with shackles and 2" receiver, Custom powdercoated fenders to match the Metalcloak fenders on the Jeep. Tires are 35X12.5R15 BFG KM2's on Interco Birddog Wheels with Rad Deflators.

The intention was to build the trailer to be suitable for daily multi-purpose use. I may add a removable lid with a cargo basket but don't see ever adding a Roof Top Tent as I want to keep it accessible and I have lots of tents already. I also wanted to keep the center of gravity low so I did not do a spring-over conversion. The axle,hubs, springs and shocks are all new. The 50+ year-old trailer was completely stripped to bare metal and rebuilt with new fasteners. The tub required a lot of work including replacing sections that were rusted completely through. The trailer was painted to match our Jeep and texture lined inside the tub and lip in black. The floor of the trailer is fitted with a section of Stall mat used for Horse stalls. It is thick and works great to prevent cargo shifting around and protects the floor of the trailer. Most of the photos below of the trailer were taken before I replaced the springs and leveled out the fenders. There is a lot more clearance now and the tires never rub on the fenders.

If anyone is interested I can post up a full build thread on the my trailer.

I'm very pleased with how it came out and how well it performs off road and on the highway. It is very quiet pulls perfectly and you seldom notice it's even back there.

Submariner My little trailer is a 1966 m 416 . I put an ARB Tent on it. I have slept in the trailer for about 7 weeks this summer for either fire camp or on vacation.

I have dragged it around about 8000 miles this year and I have slept in 38 degrees to 87 degrees.

Both have worked well together.

Right now me and the wife are on 4 weeks of travel back to Kansas to visit family and friends. One night so far it as down to 35 degrees. A wee bit chilly but we slept good.
