I deployed as an older guy with old school experiences and training that allowed me to absorb with better perspective than most, much of the issues around me.

|RookieRun34||I just don't talk about it. I want to keep that side of my life private. It makes me less boring, cause I spend most of my time doing army stuff, but its whatever. I'll just have to have more interesting civilian stuff to talk about then. I do talk about my army life to vets though, in order to hear their stories and get advice more than anything else|

Back in the day you just weren't exposed to the amount of drama that we now deal with on a daily basis. It's like watching a tennis match, except we've all turned into the ball being swatted at from every angle from every player in the world. We're also being taught not to believe anything, regardless of facts. So is it any wonder if you say you've met the president that all you get is side-eye. Then again maybe it's just plain ole jealousy. Who knows, who cares, if you know you're telling the truth then F them.|

I've found that usually a couple of questions clears up any skepticism.

|Willysguy||I've been out for over 30 years and feel some people sort of roll their eyes when I tell them what I did in the Air Force. Through most of the '80's I was a RADAR operator, called an Airborne Surveillance Technician on AWACS planes. We called it "playing Nintendo with real airplanes on a mainframe computer". Kind of shows off how long ago it was...lol|

|Golden-Arm||my stories would be so boring, you'd have to believe them. starting out in the army at age 17 was a story in itself, but it all gets rather pedestrian from there.|

I hardly ever tell stories to civilians...
One counselor lady at the VA did have me bring in my wife and kids to a couple of sessions. Kinda glad I did. At least now they know what was going on, but most of the time, I just don't feel people would get it, or even need to know it anyway.

Coast Guard here. People haven't doubted my stories from what we did while actually "doing our job." People have doubted the unbelievable stupid **** while bored underway or while we were at the academy.

|hdrolling||Normally the only time the Military ever gets brought up is if I'm talking to other vets. And since I retired near FT Bragg NC most of the vets I talk to have been to and done the same things I have.|

|jpdude999||I've learned that there are some stories you just don't tell civilians.|

|ElDuderino762||I don't know that I have ever been doubted...but I have definitely doubted some other "veterans'" stories. Seems like everybody was SF or Ranger.|
