Laffinmann I havent had much time to work on the Jeep. Still has a small leak dripping from the transmission housing area just before the transmission pan. Transmission pan is new with new seal, bolts all torqued and I dont see any leak coming from the transmission pan.

I've previously said the leak could be transmission oil which now I'm not sure about either. The leak is small so the level of transmission and motor oil have both not shown a decline on the dipsticks. The engine oil I use (mobil 1 extended high mileage) has a green tint to it when I look at it with the UV light and thats the colour that shows in the leaked oil.

I have also noticed the drips of oil on the front of the Jeep below the radiator area. Pic is attached. So maybe the leak is coming from the front and heading back as I drive?? The underneath front passenger side is dry but driver side has oil.

As always thanks for any comments and advice on what to look at.

Perhaps lowered a bit and displaying the stick figure family begging for a tug out of a spot that 4wd zjs just traversed.

No.

jeepjeepster Some silt on the magnet is normal. A layer in the bottom of the pan isnt so much.

Gotta wonder if its coming from the input seal where the torque converter slides in.

There is some dye on the transmission pan but I dont feel the dye was coming from around the pan but instead finding its way down there from above. In that second photo I took the dye looks to be coming from in between the engine oil pan and the silver transmission housing. With the car in motion it'll probably run onto the transmission pan.

Once I took off the old pan it was gross in there. The magnet was covered in dark grey grease, the bottom of the pan the same, the filter does not look like it was changed when said either.
I feel the garage my Father in law was taking this car to just didnt do the work they said. The transmission oil supposedly was replaced 15k miles ago at 115k when he asked the shop to do it.

Laffinmann Update..

The green dye leaking from the underneath is definitely from the transmission fluids, the orange dye, added later, went into the engine oil and there is no sign of orange dye leaking just the green dye on the bottom of the engine that looks like it comes from the upper part that connects between the oil pan and transmission pan.

I have the transmission pan removed (old fluid drained and green with my UV light), a replacement with drain plug, rubber gasket, rtv black gasket sealant and ATF4 transmission fluid at the ready. Also replacing the spring and doing the internal bands whilst the transmission pan is removed.

Now knowing the leak is transmission fluid what would be the recommended next steps and parts I should replace?

Thanks!!

Thanks again for that quick save

Atf4 is the latest and updated recommended fluid. Any brand will do as its a proprietary recipe from Chrysler.

If it's leaking motor oil into bellhousing, it's more than likely either rear main seal or camshaft rear cover plug.

After adding the Orange dye it looks like the green dye that was already in there is losing its green-ness so now I'm thinking the leak is oil and not transmission. I really dont know so I'll give it another week and check again.

I would love to have a 2wd 5.2 ZJ. Very nice
The jeep is running well, just this leak but has plenty of power and is reliable. It went through a lot of oil on the long drives but in general day to day use its not really going through oil too badly, nothing like a quart every 1000 miles

CountryZJ Mine is like a quart low after 7500 with a rear main leak

Timo_90xj 4 quarts of oil for roughly a 2000 mile drive? That is nowhere near normal for these engines, find where it's leaking from. If it was burning that much oil, it would show as blue(ish) smoke from the exhaust.

I was about half a quart down on the oil level in the 5.9 with 7500 mile oil change intervals, using 5W-30 or 5W-40 full synth.
