Gladiator 6x4 or 6x6 conversion for towing a 5th wheel
I am looking for information regarding possible modifications of the Gladiator into 6x6 or 6x4 with the goal to tow a custom 23' Australian "off road" 5th wheel. Adding an axel with a reinforced chassis can significantly increase the towing capability of the Gladiator both in coping with extra weight and improving stability. The engine can be upgraded with a supercharger so the power of the truck should not really be of concern. This type of mod could also be useful for carrying a proper slide on camper.
I would rather go for a 6x4. I do not think I will use the extreme off road prowess that a 6x6 could potentially offer at the expense of the much higher cost, extra weight, mechanical complexity and all the potential issues with variation in different wheel speeds. I contacted Six Wheeler Conversions in Australia a couple of weeks ago. They are very popular and have done over a 1000 conversions in the past. The cost for their modification is quite substantial but not totally crazy. Unfortunately they are not proposing anything yet for the Gladiator and they do not seem to be interested at the moment to work on a solution for that truck.
Why not going for a full size pick-up truck? Well, I like the Jeep. The Gladiator is not a very large truck. And it is the only one that you can remove the roof, the doors and even lower the windshield if you feel like it. And I like to drive convertible cars very much. Converting a full size truck into a convertible is at least USD50k and a 6x4 conversion could cost about half of that. The other advantage the 6 wheel configuration gives over a dually is better off road tracking in mud and sand.
I would be interested to know if any of you on this forum has the same crazy idea and discuss how we could make this possible.
