Sorry Gents. I'm in the midst of my 2nd rebuild. this consists of 2 79 CJ7s with 2 different engines and transmissions. My process of restoration is to collect and restore the pieces as I go. I was trying to find the drive axles ahead of time but through your explanations, I should just bide my time and get to that when I have everything put back together. Besides, I may find other problems or hurdles before I even get to that point of hooking up the drive train. Like, if I switch out a 258 for the 304, will the bell housing fit both engines and will it work for switching a t4 to a t150?

I assumed that you had installed these parts in the Jeep and could get a measurement. No need to make it a point of contention because I don't know exactly what your situation is and didn't give you the exact answer you wanted to hear. I made the suggestion I did with the thought that perhaps it was something you didn't consider or aware of. The intent was to be helpful.

|StoneTower||Lots of stuff can influence the length of the shafts. Change in axel, change in transmission, motor mount location if something was swapped, lift. Your best bet is to assemble the Jeep like you would have to anyhow and then measure and then purchase. If something is a little different than factory, you will be happy you did it in the correct order.|

80cj - I can't measure between the yokes because all of the drive components are separated from each other. None of them are connected to the Jeep right now. Plus it didn't come with a front or rear drive shaft. I can get a used drive shaft (front and rear) for $40 a piece and they are OEM. I just need to know how long they are before I grab one off of FB marketplace.
CSP - My response should answer why I can't do what you think I should do.

|Allegan11||CSP - I you read the initial post, it says that I don't have them and that all of the transmission components are separated from each other. I have no way of measuring, but thank you for your well informed response. Besides, the reason I want the measurements is so that I can get an OEM drive shaft from someone in my area but can't because I don't know what to look for.|

Meausure what you have! There are shops all over the country that build driveshafts, so find a local shop or one of the many that you can find online that will ship anywhere. Any competent builder can take the measurement you get with it sitting at ride height and determine how long each of the components need to be as well as fully compressed/fully extended length.
With all of the truck traffic that goes through Cincinnati I'm sure there's at least one shop there that could build you something.

Also, I sent you a link to Quadrates website where they list a shaft for your application. If it doesn't fit, send it back.

You should check out this guy on eBay. I bought both of my driveshafts from him for my CJ7. $150 for the front and $130 for the rear. Guaranteed not to break. Read his ad. I'm very satisfied with the product.

|Allegan11||I find that the value of the CJ7 or 5 for that matter goes down depending on how much modifications are made to it. The more authentic and OEM, the more it's worth. Plus, a custom drive shaft is going to be upwards of $400 or more.|
