So here's what I did;

There is enough space inside the key cylinder (at the broken end) to insert a collar which I made from aluminium. Secured the collar to the remaining unbroken part of the cylinder with a 4-40 countersunk machine screw and locktite. Ends of the collar were trimmed/filed to the same dimension as the original slot.

Took me about an hour, faster than shipping and I get to keep my single key. Saved a few bucks to boot.

MaintMech I took the easy route. I now have two keys for the Jeep. One to start and one to open the doors. For me NBD. Marked the start key with Wite-Out.

V8GCZJ If you look at this pic the two pieces are swedged together(center of where the piece broke off). Problem is getting this apart and if you do how do you put it back together? This is why a locksmith cant get to the key tumblers. IF they had a new piece to swedje together after changing the tumblers then it may be possible.

Your "good" locksmith apparently isn't that good. A good one won't need the dorman replacement brought to him but will have a proper replacement on hand. One that can be configured with the stock key.

F1wanab Yup that was it, cylinder was broken just like the one in the photo. Thanks for the responses.

I super glued the cylinder back together for now until I can get a replacement.

Depends on the key cylinder you get. I bought one at a local parts place and took it to a good local locksmith. LordHobbit If you take your key to a competent locksmith they should be able to match your key to a new cylinder.

V8GCZJ Not the switch the ignition lock cylinder! What happens is the end of it breaks off and that's why you cant stat it.

Ignition switch start position

Hi all
96 4.0L
ignition switch turns to the run and acc positions, but won't go to the start position.

I don't believe there is any sort of electro/mechanical interlock on the switch but wanted to confirm.

Done all the usual coaxing with the transmission interlock and steering wheel but switch won't turn beyond the run position.
Help will be appreciated
