Its thicker, has more additives, and... oddly.. tends to be cheaper then normal engine oils.
I'll change it usually after I've burned off 10 quarts or so. Its pretty black at that point.
My bigger problem is I can't get most filters to fit. Years ago I buggered up the frame a bit, and most filters just don't fit at all. The purolator ones fit, but pretty much all other brands don't. Fram and Wix-based ones don't. Or maybe another brand? its a hassle, so I just always use purolators now.

|bicyclemonkey||I was told to use Valvoline VR1 20w-50 in my '67 Beetle, so I'm just going to put that in my 258 CJ-7 when I change the oil next month. I only put maybe 3000 miles tops each year on each of those vehicles so I just change the oil every spring.|

I prefer a little thicker oil for older engines used in "normal" climates. Either 10-40 gas or 15-40 diesel oils are fine. The engines aren't sophisticated enough to require synthetic oils.
I run 15-40 Rotella changed every 5000 miles.
Rotella is also an acceptable oil for wet clutch applications in bikes and quads.

I use ordinary 10w30, not synthetic. With the low miles i put on the oil will not break down for several years. I try for annual oil changes. These engines have been running on this stuff for near 40 years, enough said.
However I do add a can of Arbo engine oil treatment to keep the lifters quiet. No idea what is in it but would not be surprised to see zinc. It is also very cheap.

I use Valvoline 10w40 High Milage in all my CJs. Many years , no problems.
Now if you really want to stir the pot, ask everyone’s opinions on oil filters.

Might want to change the displacement of your engine in your profile from 268 to 258 - maybe it was bored over?
Well OK - I'll jump in. Heavy Duty Flame Suit On. I use the following oil & oil filter in my 1979 Jeep CJ5 304 V8 . . . . .
Valvoline VR1 10W-30 (Non-Synthetic). I change the oil with the oil filter twice a year. I put maybe 2,000 - 3,000 miles on my Jeep per year.
I purchase the oil and oil filter from Summit Racing.
NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW: If this oil and oil filter will work for your particular engine - How your Jeep is driven - Or the climate where you and your Jeep reside.

CJ-7 258 Oil Type
Just picked up a 1979 CJ-7 258. I have read all the threads about oil types, but I can't find any thread newer than 2011. Does anyone have any updated advice on the best motor oil type to use? Still best to use a diesel rated oil for higher zinc levels, or is there a better method? If I missed a thread that is more recent, I apologize. Looking forward to getting into this project!
