|Bigrigr||Mine did this very thing upon getting it home after buying it. My transfer case way dangerously low on fluid. Because the fluid was low, the Progressive coupler that engages the front axle could not engage( this coupler uses fluid pressure to engage clutches to send power to the front axle) On a gamble, i drained what little bit was there, and refilled it with the proper Mopar fluid, AND added a small bottle of friction modifier to the case. I got lucky, because a couple days later, after putting on 50 miles or so, my front axle started engaging again. I worked perfectly after that until i took it out to do the 242HD swap. You could try this and cross your fingers. Its possible that it might have the wrong fluid in it even though its full. Some people have been know to put the wrong fluid in because of ignorance, or because they are to cheap to buy the Mopar stuff.The wrong fluid will prevent proper function, just like low fluid can.|

|Bigrigr||As I understand it, all the 99-2004 models with Quadradrive or Quadra trac II 4X4 system in them have the 247 'case. And i believe that all 247's were the same in those years. Double check the silver and red tag on the back of the case to be sure. If you stumble on a tag that says 242HD, or 242WJ,(not 242j), grab it, and the rear driveline that goes with it. Its a super simple swap, and a way better transfer case. 242J will still work, but with a little more time and effort. FYI|

Concerning all 247’s being the same. He may have to reuse the front yolk on the old transfer case depending on which driveshaft they both have. I assume the imput is the same with different transmission’s. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
I hit a couple of junkyard’s Monday, got a beautiful front bumper for my 04 for $35. I inquired about the 247 in it, they told me $90. Double cardan $35, it’s a quadradrive. Might go back on Saturday for some spare parts.

Does the 247 fit in all models from 1999 to 2004?
I've been looking on line and see there's a bunch (used/rebuilt) but not a lot for the 2001 year.

It should have a 247 transfer case and it doesn't have a viscous coupler. It uses a gerotor and a clutch pack to engage the front axle when in 4HI and the rear axle slips. If the fluid is good and proper, it is probably the clutch packs which are worn or contaminated. I ran into this issue too. Previous owner used gear oil with friction modifier and I bought it not knowing how picky they can be with fluid. Replacement differentials are kind of expensive, around $350 and up just for the differential. I ended up rebuilding a 242 to swap in and now I don't have to worry about worn clutches and have the freedom to select 4x4 modes.
The good news is that the transfer case will continue to function, just with 2WD-N-4LO.

2001 GC Limited Transfer Not Working
Hi folks, dropping in from the ZJ side of the forum.
This is for my son's 2001, 4.7 Limited. He has (I believe) the 249 transfer case (4H-N-4L) that doesn't seem to be functioning properly. Rear wheels will spin but the front won't engage. Fluid is good and proper (Mopar fluid).
I'm not sure where to go on this. Viscous coupler failure? I don't have a real clue so I'm looking for guidance/suggestions on how to troubleshoot this unit.
