PimaXJ You got bent over on this deal. If the interior will clean up & shine as good as the exterior, as it is a Limited, I would say go for the repairs. You will have to spend time looking for a donor where you are but take the time if you have the time to locate a wrecked donor. Certainly should go after the seller for misrepresentation. Before you dig into the project, remember that the seller could be made by a court decision to take possession of the vehicle again & reimburse you for all of the costs you have incurred. Good luck on this.

Well at this point I am going to fix it. and force money out of the guy by courts if ness. I had ordered a bunch of parts BEFORE it arrived and now I have them here, and I am outta time snow will soon be upon me.

75SV1 I didn't notice the Ad in post 10. You state an Auction price. Is there a resolution center for that site? I'd think this is fraud. Come pick up your Heep. All money including shipping cost comes back.

Though I am not new here I lost my log in data when I had to switch computers and I had to re register so I cant post photos yet. But I did do a video 2 days after I got it. Arrived Friday night I did this on Sunday.

Ouch, what was shipping? The cost of running and not running is a lot of money. Many would say I am generous in my pricing. What was shipping? I'd be the seller can refund the total cost and go from there. Let's say its worth $1000. I'd be asking $4K back. And I'd be generous at that. Yeah, we all probably had those experiences. OK, lets get to the trans. Is it bad or just needs some electrical work? First, yes check the fluid level. First check it not running. The level should be way above the fill level, about the first Z bend. Then start the vehicle. With it in neutral, check the fluid. Did the level drop? Drop to in specs? That good if so. It means the pump is working. If not, then bad, pump not working, needs replaced. If pump is working, unplug the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). Its on the trans tunnel, up by the radio on the drivers side. Drive it like a manual. shifting the 'gears'. You will not have trans kick down. So, brake to slow down to appropriate speed level to shift. Yes, I'd also do a fluids change, also a filter change.
The motor, does it lose coolant? What's the compression on the cylinders? The coolant could be warped or cracked head. Or water pump, radiator, radiator cap etc. Black oil is not the death of an engine. Some of the synthetics change black quick. So, I think you need to trace down the issues and see if it is repairable.

She runs and drives great! There are zero warning lights on the dash, recently had some service done which includes; a fresh oil change, new shocks (all around,) new stabilizer bushings, brand new fuel pump and a new battery. Brakes have good amount of meat left, tires have plenty of thread, but unfortunately show some signs of minor dry rot. Mechanically sound from the engine to the transmission. She pulls strong and shifts good through every gear, 4x4 works as it should. The ride is as you would expect from a Jeep, suspension feels good without any unusual noises or rattles.
The exterior is in good condition especially for a vehicle that is 20 years old. She is one of those rare Jeeps where she is completely rot and rust free, there is minimum-if any surface rust. All original floor panels and running boards. The paint is in good condition, you may find some minor nics, dings and imperfections that you would expect from a vehicle of this age. There is some scratches and some paint imperfection on the front bumper and the lower part of the left front door has two mellow dents (visible in picture 6.) The interior is in good/fair condition, the ceiling does not sag, and all interior features work as they should. Minor wear and tear is visible such as some stains on the carpet, minor cracking in the leather of the drivers seat, and some plastics have scuffs etc. I also have noticed the automatic door lock isnt engaging the locks, makes a sound but doesnt transfer to the lock, locks work individualy just fine. Over-all she is in great conditon inside and out. Its not easy to find these XJ's in good condition without lift kits or rust, dont miss out on this one.
I have two sets of original keys, owners manual, spare and matts.
I went over most of the important basics of the vehicle and summed up as much as I can without it being a lot to read. kadetklapp It’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Ideally you would already have an excellent running, driving, lifted, modded, but ROTTED/wrecked one sitting there just waiting for a decent shell to transfer everything over to. Mighty Car Mods loves doing this. To do it right is lots of work but pretty fun and you’d have a well sorted rig.

Do a KKB report and check out the usual place you find XJ's for sale. Subtract the retail cost of used parts and install labor for the repairs.

Around here good used 150,000 mile motors are $3-500 and good used AW-4 with a 90 day warranty are $150-250. You could be on the road for not much and work on getting the busted junk rebuilt, or just sell it as a good runner.

SmashDN Unless that 4.0 is locked up or so warped from overheating I bet it can be repaired, in a garage by a guy with the right tools and patience.

If it will start, put a can of sea foam in the oil and let it run. Drain and put a new filter on it. Repeat. You will likely uncover some leaks doing this. Rear main seal, etc. (At least the oil is black and not a milk shake.)
Tranny I bet you can drain, clean the pan, and flush the whole system. Keep draining and flushing with fresh tranny fluid until it stays cherry red. Add a spin on filter to catch junk. Replace filter after 1000 miles or so with a new one.
Change the thermostat and flush the cooling system and heater core or flush then change the thermostat, whatever the proper order is.

The 4.0 is a robust engine more akin to a tractor engine than anything else. They are tough but can overheat.

Get the fluids sorted out and as long as you don't have a cracked head or warped block or head I bet it will be fine. Just take some time and many flushes and filter changes.
