Rear band and it's linkage system - that is what mechanically engages reverse. You need to drop the fluid pan to be able to see & adjust rear band.

LordHobbit might just be a misadjusted transmission gear selector linkage? so when you think it is reverse it's actually in neutral? Go play around and see. Certainly he'll let you take it out for drive.

ZJ Will Not Reverse

Hey guys, I'm new here!

I'm looking at a Grand Cherokee 1996 ZJ and the owner says all forward gears work fine, but the reverse gear acts as if it is neutral.
No crash history, has over 200k miles, Limited model with the V8, and its an automatic.
No lift, no tire size change.


I'm wondering if this is a common or known problem and yes I know its vague but its hard for me to investigate the problem as I don't own the vehicle yet.
