lovett86 Why not just use the motor and find a harness and computer for a manual. The manual trans from the cj will bolt rite up to the 4l or find an automatic from a cj that the transfer case fits on. I think it would be better then adding adaptors to an already long drive train. Just an idea. Good luck with the jeep.

Eazyrider805 Looks like you got a good start. I attempted to put a 4.0 into a 73 CJ5. I decided that to make the jeep driveable it would take way more time and money than to just sell it and get a running rig. That being said I think that if my father left me his jeep I would dump any amount of money into it to make it run. The amount of memories alone is worth it. Keep your eyes on ebay and other sites like craigslist for an adapter you might get lucky. Keep plugging away at it. Little by little and try to get in touch with some local guys to see who can help. Lotta people that are willing to help just for the sake of helping.

4.0 swap cj7 budget build

Hey guys just started a project I've been thinking about for about a year now. My dad left his cj7 to me before passing away. Fast forward to roughly 1 year ago, I purchased a 96 Cherokee from a coworker with hopes to one day use the motor and trans out of it, but for that time being had to be used as my daily. Well the time came. The xj's floors are like the Flintstones. No heat, back doors, and hatch were broke, among some other issues but the motor/trans still runs like a top.

5/6/19 ,
Started off taking the grill, radiator, and hoses off. Removed drive shafts, cut the exhaust, removed cross member, and unplugged all things connected to motor, trans, and tcase. After removing everything needed, out came the the drivetrain all in one.

Being a budget build, forced to take a break.

Well had to call into work today and head into urgent care due to what I thought might be pneumonia. After getting medicine and a steroid shot in the ***, I was resting on the couch, when all of a sudden I thought it might be a good idea to pull the trans and tcase from the cj7 (motor has been out for quite some time already).

Unfortunately that's were I come to another stand still. Saving up the extra cash for a adapter for the aw4 trans and dana 300 tcase. I am also gonna be deleting what I can from the engine harness, but gonna have to study up on schematics.
