I think the hardened gear issue is more prevalent with the V8 engines because the cam gear is a separate part and is often softer steel than the distributor gear. It's usually best to order a matching set of gears for the V8.
On a 258, the cam gear is machined into the cam, so it's already hardened steel. Therefore, it's not as susceptible to the wear issue.

If you are concerned about this possible wear, pull out your distributor and visually inspect (look at with authority) the wear on the gears. 200 miles is enough to see if you are going to fail.

Ebay HEI distributor still bad?
I bought a HEI distributor off eBay last year before I knew as much as I do now. I know they had a problem with hardened gears, especially with the V8’s. I have 258. Are people still experiencing the same cam gear issues with these on a 258? How can I tell if my HEI is damaging my engine? I’ve probably put less then 200 miles on engine since installing the distributor.
