My airbag warning light was coming on intermittently but now stays on is there anyway to determine the problem without going to a dealer?
During normal operation of the airbag control module, the warning lamp will illuminate for seven seconds as a bulb check feature then turn off -- the ACM subsequently monitors the wiring/circuitry for the two airbags as well as performs self checks. If any problems are detected, the ACM will illuminate the airbag warning light. The airbag system is normally a very reliable one, rarely giving any faults or issues, the one exception being the clockspring. The clockspring serves as the contact between the electrical components located in/on the steering wheel and the rest of the body; problems will often arise due to water or foreign matter intrusion. Things you can do yourself would be to verify the airbag fuses are present and in good condition in the fuse block, and you can check that the connectors for the ACM, airbags, and the clockspring are clean and solidly mated. **WARNING** make sure you disconnect the battery and let the Jeep sit for at least ten minutes before messing with any airbag system connectors or fuses. If you can't find anything wrong with the fuses or connectors, the problem most likely is due to a bad clockspring, but it couldn't hurt to have the dealership or somebody with a DRB scan tool see what fault codes are kicking out.
