Not to shock anyone, but a hum/whine that changes in tone as you lightly accel/decel and generally gets louder the faster you go is often loose carrier bearing preload. Easiest way to determine, pull axles, pull the cover, pull the carrier retaining caps and see if the carrier practically falls out. I bet it's loose in there.
This condition is not ok if it's present. Seen it plenty of times. Often a result of someone thinking they know what they are doing rebuilding a diff and not setting enough carrier bearing preload.

Not to hijack from Jared, but just wanted to add that my own ZJ makes a very similar sound. At speeds above 30mph, there's a noticeable hum/whine from the front, but only when I let off the gas. Increases in frequency at higher speeds, but again, only when I let off the gas pedal.
I've never noticed anything bad to come of it, but it is one of those noises I've been trying to chase down with no luck. So, your not alone Jared.

You have to take the front wheels off and check for play on everything.
Disconnect the steering knuckle from the steering linkage and check that the knuckle has no play (do this with the wheel off) and that the bearing has no play and is smooth and is not leaking grease. It's too difficult to tell with everything connected and the wheels on. CV's also.
Then check your control arm bushings and EVERY articulating suspension part for play
You are sure to find lot's of problems. You have to fix all of them to get a perfect ride.
CVs too can make a noise when there is no grease.

|Uniblurb||It's still beyond me how a "so called shop" could even align it with bent or broken parts?? Did you ask them to inspect if for damage and mention running into a ditch at 25-30mph?|

Yeah you probably bent something, maybe even an axle tube.
FYI, it's not always in 4wd unless your viscous coupler is toast. When you lose traction 4wd kicks in with a properly functioning viscous coupler.

|JaredD33||I hit pretty hard. Probably going at least 25-30 MPH. My right front wheel took the hit. The steering was jacked after that. The differential problem happened a few days later.|

How hard did you hit the ditch? I wonder if you possiblye bent or tweaked the front diff.

^ agree with MrR and you have 2 separate problems while you best get your steering fixed first!
That must have been a "fly-by-night" or "speedy" alignment shop to do an alignment when you have some bent or broken steering related parts. Most good ones even help diagnose the problems while saying bring it back for an alignment after you get those problems fixed or give you an estimate on them doing the repairs.
It's probably best to have a helper turn the steering wheel back/forth while you're under the front looking for loose, sloppy, or broken parts. Who knows what's bad under there after running it into a ditch.
Your differential is a whole different ball-game while some real good info by Kg in that link for setting up a differential right.

|MrRoundel||I agree with the idea of fixing the steering issue first. That stuff can kill you, and perhaps others. If it feels like you're driving on ice when you're not driving on ice, that's a problem. Conversely, in most worst case scenarios, the differential noise should only leave you stranded and in need of a tow. Good luck.|

|JaredD33||I'll try pulling the front shaft. I think it's dumb as hell how its 4 wheel all the time anyways. Do you think my steering issue is something totally unrelated? The front end alignment didn't help anything at all.|
