Martch I used to use a cooler bag, but to be precise, a thermo bag, but it doesnít keep things cold for too long and doesnít cool anything. I have a fridge for fish, after I washed the fridge, I use it as a fridge for beer when we go hiking or fishing. I'm completely satisfied with such cooler. I recently saw on the portal Hike Zone reviews of best fishing coolers. Perhaps this will help you make a choice.

aggiejon I don't have any helpful suggestions. I just took out my backseat and put the gear there. Dog used to ride shotgun or in the middle and sleep on top of the cooler. Now when the kids and wife go, it's a receiver basket rack.

222Doc i have seen so many of the rear mounted ice chest end up trail fodder. funny as f to watch one fly off in hard trails. Never see people run so D fast to recover beer. best one was in Moab though. Xj about 20 foot up a real steep shelf/ledge giving it. back hatch comes fly'en open and out comes the ice chest bomb, sleeping bags and what ever else was not tied down. looked like a dump truck emptying out. For second i was thinking maybe a unseat belted rider was coming out. never know.

I carry a rather small cooler even on very long trails/trips ie Rubicon/Dusy any of the 3-5 days out in the rocks. its just a 36Q that is strapped to the bed. truth is i dont need it really. Can do with out. Coming from a cj2 and cj5 the jk 2d seems huge. i can pack it 2 people 1 large coon hound. he gets over half the rear bed. All our stuff. for any of the long trails. but have to swing mount the tire/gas/trash. But if its just me i can go with everything in the back and that includes a 35 all my gear, under a tono covered 2d... wife and dog is like bringing up the rear. i could live out of a back pack over week. people bring to much stuff.

nice yj

RnEmOvr Does make sense, only issue is I removed my spare because is would hit as I came off ledges. Not sure if cooler would do the same.

Kuntryboy816 Okay, bear with me here as I'm trying to do this on my phone...

I'm a simple guy and tend to try and make simple solutions. Go buy a decent quality stadium seat(red), use 1-2 straps (green) across it to hold it to the tailgate or you can use bolts and very large washers where the rubber spare tire bumps were, open seat, place cooler in it, use a bungee around the cooler and tailgate together (vertically)... when done, remove bungee then cooler, fold up seat bottom and secure flat up against tailgate with the strap and button closure that they usually already have on them. You can even get one with a team logo that you can use as swag when it's not in cooler usage mode. Does that make any sense?

I obviously need a good way to tie it down and would like to keep the external storage pockets (for snacks and dog food that I don't want cold).

Still looking for a solution to this? Threads a little dated...
