|Cuzzzz||Just found a set of 3:54's complete. Thanks for the advice! As for the 4:10 gears I do like the low gears when off roading but for a daily driver to low for me.|

|80cj||How much rust is there in the front axle? If it's bad enough to have to go through an overhaul then either find another front end or change the gears. 3.31's were used on 81 and later Jeeps.|

Or you could change the rear to a 3.54

|Cuzzzz||Well the front was interesting no gear oil and rusty the ring gear has 46 teeth and pinion has 13 with that said and I did this right the front is a 3:54 and the rear is a 3:31 am I right??|

|80cj||Stock ratios on 76's was 3.54 with 4.09 optional. So already you know the rear has been changed. Be interesting to see what the front is....|

Eventually something will have to give, on loose dirt, it will be the slippage of the tires. On a high traction surface, it will be the weakest part in your driveline.
To bind up that fast, you may have different gearing. I'd pull the diff covers and see.
Not knowing what the PO did for maintenence, it's a good idea to pull the covers anyhow and change the oil in them. Same with the transmission, transfer case, coolant, brake fluid, engine oil,bearings, brakes, etc.....assume the PO did nothing, and that anything they did do was wrong, and you'll be way better off in the long run.

|Cuzzzz||Understood on turning on dry pavement but driving in a straight line on dry as well? I have the rear cover off the jeep are there going to be any stamps on the ring gear or do I need to jack it up and count the teeth?|

|Cuzzzz||Ok after the last few replies I went down the street and this may seem wrong but when I pull back into 4low the ratio is lower so I pulled it back further and it goes all the way in 4 low it binds and pops out as well so I guess the ratio is different I must not have had it engaged completely. The front axel has been changed out because this is a 76 with disc brakes. I am going down to see what rear gear I have which is a good road gear so I am guessing around 3:55 or so. Thanks for the advice|

Jeeps do not have any give in the transfer case like those in a Cherokee, newer TJ's, etc. My best advice... DO NOT drive it on dry pavement in 4wd.
Take it out on a dirt road and test it out. That way when the weather is nasty, if there is any problems, they will be fixed now in the nice weather.
It is normal for a CJ to buck and jump while turning in 4wd on dry pavement, hard packed dirt, etc.

|Cuzzzz||It will not even roll hardly in 4hi it just seems to bind up have to give it more gas and yes this is on dry pavement at very low speed. Maybe try on a dirt road but if it snows this year I don't think I could use it because of the binding on dry pavement might throw me off the road. I have had 4x4s in the past but on dry road n a straight line you can't hardly tell a difference. So all jeeps will do this?|
