I very much considered, and am still considering using that space similarly to how you describe. I have a Viair on-board compressor, tank, and aux battery I want to put there. I would so rarely need to access it that it makes sense to use the existing tire winch to just raise and lower the skid I plan to make. But to what end? I don't know how strong it is but I doubt it will hold the skid AND the rest I want up in there. Probably better to just bolt it up.

Soooo...10k should just about do it? lol...I'm kidding. I guess I need to learn how to do some metal work. Finding a bumper combo for our WK's that does what I want it to do and not what some weirdo designer that doesn't even own a WK want's it to do is kinda tough.

Just a thought that I had a while back that I considered doing. Since your spare is now on your bumper, you have that big old space underneath where it used to be that has a winch to hold it in place. Why not fab up a sort of cage under there that can store several rotopacks of fuel and/or water? Held in place just like the tire used to be.

I don't know how shops make money doing this. I cannot remember the numbers off the top of my head, but in steel, hinges, latches, welding wire, gas, abrasives bedliner... Billbo1970 Hit 150k and decided to some maintenance... some of which wasn't needed but I figured what the heck, the mileage is up there now and better to do it now while I have the money than later when I might not! LOL

Replaced front diff bushings with OE up front and super pro poly for the L/R round ones (had the 2 round ones done for me, beyond my abilitiy)
Replaced the throttle body (hail mary attempt at clearing P0420/P0430 before committing $3k for a new CARB compliant cat pipe assembly)
Replaced the spark plugs (trying out those new NGK Rutheniums)
Replaced the SP wires
Replaced all 3 Coil Packs
Replaced MAP sensor (That bolt is a ***** to get at!)
Replaced the temp sensor in the AI Resonator
Replaced all 3 wiper blades (I highly recommend the ANCO Transform, last set laster OVER a year!) T21UB https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=4009362&jsn=1

Last week I:
Changed all 4 brake pads (RAYBESTOS EHT1080H) I really like these Hybrid pads!
Changed front rotors (RAYBESTOS 780289PER)

This pad/rotor combo brakes better then it did when it was brand new!!

Its all home made. Along with the rack, the rock sliders, and the front skid plate. I bought the receiver drop so I could tow regular trailers without the tongue being 36" in the air, but I built the braces to support all the twisting leverage on the bumper with the huge drop. They go back and tie into bumper mount bolts on each side.

2005JGC I can almost taste the campfire smoke and burnt marshmallows and feel the uncomfortable sand between my butt cheeks! The family is loading up and headed to the beach for a week. Starting in a boring campground where most of my family is camping, we are going to crash one of their sites for a night. Then we continue on south to the dunes on the southern Oregon coast where we will be until Friday.

I have been dying for a trasharoo for a while because I have young kids and a dog. I hate dirty pull ups or picked up dog poop or straight up trash from grabbing grub on the road floating around the interior. So having the large trash bag hanging off the back of the jeep is going to be SO nice. Plus it gives us space to make things cleaner than they were when we got there and pack out other peoples crap. Not really something a family of 5 humans and a German Shepherd has room for in one of these WK's.

I also caved and bought a pair of maxtrax and got them mounted to the rack. I was interested in a set of the RotoTrax because I have 2 4 gallon RotoPax and will RARELY have both of them on at the same time. I have the mount and extenders already. But I have heard BAD things about them... one local guy knew some insider info he wasn't willing to get into on the facebook group but he told people to stay away at all costs. So Maxtrax it is. I didn't need them. I have never been stuck on the dunes and at 8-10psi in the tires, dont plan on it. But I have also always been with at least one other rig, and there is always a set of traction boards in the group.

Maxtrax all mounted up. Pretty pleased. I couldnt make myself spend 400 dollars on the set with the replaceable bolts. Hopefully I don't regret that decision the first time I use these to help someone else out and they melt all the pins off of them.


I had my own flag but with the previous tire carrier design I had that was welded in under the factory rear bumper, I didnt think it was 8 feet in the air when installed in the mount. So a buddy had a flag he picked up from an ATV shop near the dunes one trip when he forgot to bring his. He was doing some cleaning and offered it up to our group and I snagged it to be more legal on the dunes. This is the flag he gave me and I had to modify it to better fit the WK.

Steering wheel leather wrap

Picked up new-to-me 2008 CRD, and so far so good, except for the steering wheel falling apart. Seems this is a common problem with the pleather covering the original wheels. Not wanting to drop much coin, I got a stitch on wheel cover off amazon, Superskin, 26CAD+tax. What it will cost you is a fair amount of time (~4h) and some blisters on hands for pulling the whole thing together, properly. (Note use of damp cloth to soften / swell the top-grain leather.)

...still just driving!

I put a hard-day's driving in yesterday going to Houston and back: a hair under 500 miles! I fueled up 3 times in less than 24 hrs...

Clicked off 235k on the odometer also. That's 5k miles in 3 months.



Sorry about the fuzzy picture. Except for in-town driving, I pretty much had the cruise set at 80 the entire time. Out the door at 4 am and back home just after 6 pm.

Hemi did great but is using about 1 qt of oil every 5k miles; not bad considering the mileage.

Front Bumper is KB offroad. It's been smoothed and painted. As it comes you'd want to stick with a flat paint or textured coating. It is far from paint ready.

Wheels and tires are Moto Metal MO978 18x9 +18mm and Nitto Ridge Grappler LT275/70R18. Pinch weld mod with a LOT of additional hammering.

Mine was $900. I needed most everything from the bar forward from an accident anyway, so it wasn't that much additional over factory stuff. I thought about a winch, but the winch bumper seems looks like it sticks out a a lot. Wasn't a fan of the look. Looks like you can still do a hidden winch with some modification to this bumper, so I'll likely go that route in the future.

Having a hidden winch mount, and having built my own rear bumper, and being in the planning stages for building my own front bumper... It kills me that every winch bumper holds the winch up above the frame rails, in front of the grill. Bumper manufacturers for Toyota/lexus products have been hiding the winches down in the bumpers between the frame rails forever, this is not a new concept. The KB bumper looks great, and if I was buying bumpers it would probably be the KB bumpers (or the goliath rear). I don't like the idea of pulling from a place with upwards of 19k lbs (full force of the winch on a snatch block) that is going to twist down on the ends of my frame rails when there is a bunch of dead space between my frame rails down lower that will pull straight on the frame rails. Add in the cooling problems these have, just driving my pig up the mountain with the 33's and higher ambient temps I watch my gauge wonder up up up if I am trying to maintain 5 or 10 over the speed limit. Then park a winch in front of the grill... I will definitely be building a front bumper around my current hidden winch setup!

schobbs I got a new appendage for my Jeep this weekend and then promptly took it camping 200 miles away. The pic is a little misleading and makes the camper look monstrous behind me. It isn't small but it only weighs 3000lbs empty and we don't need to take too much with us now and is only 7ft wide vs 8ft like most campers. That being said my WK with the 3.7l (and no tow package, I added the hitch and wiring for the brake controller/etc) pulled it just fine. Ran 65-80 with no problems just burned a lot of gas (9-10mpg). I just used the auto shift and put it in 3 and left it. I thought i'd need to add a mechanical fan to help with temps but it was 99-103 all the way home and my temp gauge never moved. I did replace the radiator, hoses, thermostat, water pump all last year though I'm also looking at adding a transmission cooler but it never gave me any fits either and leaving it in 3 it doesn't shift gears at all on the interstate unless I get stuck in slower traffic coming up to a hill and it'll kick down into 2nd. I need to see if my bluetooth odb2 reader I have reads transmission temps, I know it does coolant temp i've used it for that before. All and all wife and I are happy with the purchase and it beats sleeping on the ground!

Junebug7272 I finally got started on the mock up of my custom built rock rails yesterday. The plan is to attach to the mount points under the door seal and then also to the body seam underneath. These replace the ridiculous plastic rockers. Will add pics as I progress.
