TomFoolery just wanted to add my story- as this thread was very helpful. my 98 XJ.

my idle is normally around 750, one day it went up to 2700. it was so loud i knew right away something was wrong. shifting gears the car was jumpy, it was hard to brake, and coasting could get up to 20mph on flat land.

i followed these directions and cleaned a bit on the throttle body, no improvement, so i thought the sensor died. brought it to a mechanic i trust and it turned out my IAC had a short and the motor died. so i got a new one and now my idle is back.

my battery happened to drain out the same day, so i thought maybe the short drained the battery. i asked the mechanics and they said likely no. so it was a coincidence. turned out i didnt drive it for a week and it was extremely cold.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find youtube videos, or google images that walk you through the process. It's pretty straight forward though.

No,you don't force anything,I think you need to do some more reading on the forums before you try this one.

Throttle cables and connectors.

Very nice write-up but it would have been nice to get some info on how to remove the throttle cables and connectors. I eventually found out that the the left throttle cable plastic attachment slides out and the right one snaps out. not sure what is the good way to remove the electrical connectors. i just forced them off.

joanofnick After following the steps. I turned the key to start the jeep and it didnt even crank. Any suggestions?

Cherokee_Johnny After doing EVERYTHING to my '96 XJ 4.0, I overcame the intimidation factor to tackle
my '97 Dodge B3500 Ram Van, 5.9L motor with 250k miles., still running original MOPAR everything.
replaced the cam sensor, crank sensor, oil pres. sender, plug set, wire set, dist cap, rotor AND,
last but far from the least, the CPM that was driving me NUTS with the "hard to start" issue.
Removed the throttle body and cleaned all the sensors, just as easy as my Cherokee XJ.

On the topic of my XJ, it was running less than acceptable with choking, hacking, barfing,
staggering on takeoff, - - - - replaced both O2 sensors and it mellowed out to be a fine running machine.
Then, after cleaning the Throttle Body and sensors, it even got BETTER !! 18-19 mpg..... (4.0L automatic 4x4)
then, put refrigerant into the A/C and the mileage dropped to a pitiful 13-14 mpg. TERRIBLE.
But, oh well, summer is upon us and it is BRUTAL here in Floridaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

this is an EXCELLENT tutorial !!! the zip-tie thing to hold the throttle open is well worth the read by itself.

JeepsNJeeps Yeah, im gonna do my plugs and clean the TB and IAC tomorrow. Hopefully it fixes the problem. Thanks for the info guys!

With the mileage you describe you have. A good throttle body cleaning to include the IAC wouldn't be considered unnecessary. Even if it doesn't fix your problem it's just good preventive maintenance. I do mine every spark plug change.

Could be the crankshaft position sensor. Located down at the bell housing.

Thing is a hall sensor and it does get affected by temperature hence why it works after waiting 10-15min.

I had similar problems a few years ago where it just cranked and cranked and only sometimes started. When it did and you drove it, it was jerking all over the place.

I don't want to do the IAC or any other maintenance thats unnecessary. Seems to me that my tire size and lift kits are completely irrelevant for my OP.

A V6 cylinder engine would have 2 cylinder heads, one on each side of the V formation of the engine block. Your 4.0L engine has one cylinder head that sits on the top of the engine block.
Also if you do in fact have the 4.0L engine with an automatic transmission, the transmission would be the 32RH. If you look at the rear axle differential cover and it has a rubber/plastic fill plug it would be the d35 axle. If it has a metal fill plug it could be the D44 axle. If your front axle is still OEM it would be the LPd30 axle.

Look for a metal tag attached to two of the differential cover bolts, this will help you find out what axle gearing you have.

What size tires do you have?

Do you have any suspension lift installed?...
