The trick is to get the spare mounted tight utilizing tailgate snubbers, bought or fabed. If the tire is not tight then it will lead to failure down the road.

|RockyClymer||Yup...Chrysler rates the tailgate tire carrier at 50 lbs and then hangs the 74 on them...go figure, but that is the fact. I think the mechanic got the 200 lb from the recommended dead hitch weight limit on the trailer hitch rating...not the tire carrier.|

You may want to educate that mechanic, otherwise there's going to be some PO'ed customers coming back to him wondering why their tailgates are popping welds.
IMO you can run a 35" on the tailgate for a while as long as you prevent it from jossling around with the Daystar tire stops and resting it on the bumper, but that's with a "normal" 35. I personally wouldn't put a Toyo MT on the tailgate for any extended period of time, that is a heavy *** tire.

I have had that same tire mounted on my stock bracket for 3+ years with no problem. One thing you need are either extended tire stops or make sure you have a wedge of some sort between the tire and bumper to prevent movement that way. I have 3.75" BS on my rim and the tire is snug up against the bumper. Even jumping the jeep on dunes and going down some nasty whoopties that have smashed my bumperstops I havent seen any bends so far.
NO idea how that mechanic got 200lbs....from chrysler I have read they are only rated for like 50lbs....

|McKBrew||On the same note your tire/rim combo most likely weighs less than 200# (as a guess, probably around 100#) With some extended tire stops from Daystar, you will be fine for the near term.|

Tailgate weight capacity 200 lbs.??
I know that this topic has been hashed around a lot, but I heard something this morning that made me want to ask if others have heard this also.....
I was talking with the 4 wheel specialist that is re-gearing and lifting my Jeep '10 Rubicon and asked about my options for hanging a heavy spare tire, (35 inch Toyo Open Country MT), on the tailgate of my Jeep.
He said that the Jeep tailgate is designed to carry up to 200 lbs. of weight and that I will be fine with the 35 inch spare tire as long as it is well secured and mounted tightly.
I have tried to find information about the weight capacity of the tailgate but have not been able to find any published specs.
I believe what he is saying but I wonder where he got the 200 lb. capacity number for the tailgate.
