73wagon this is really frustrating, I just ordered another one on ebay and it was advertised as being 30 5/8" wide which would totally work. I got it today and it measures exactly 29.5" wide

73wagon I am thinking about just replacing it with the OEM version from autozone. It is copper and brass. What do you think of that?

RockRollin Thats frustrating.
My radiator and core support measures 30", outside of flange fwiw. Yours looks exactly like mine.
how much separation do you have from the fan blade to the radiator.

73wagon got it all ready, even added a new transmission cooler

tried to install this radiator I bought from ebay that said it would fit a 1973 wagoneer and it does not fit!

The bolt pattern does not match up, that radiator is not wide enough.

RockRollin You have three things letting you're cooling system down as it is.
Leaking radiator
overflow container
low cfm fixed fan
Any one of these will effect the cooling capabilities, the biggest being the radiator then the low cfm fixed fan, and finally the overflow container. To be at maximum efficiency correct all three, but any one of these can improve performance of the system.
Don't overlook the chemical flush, it will make a difference. There are many: Prestone, Zerex, etc, etc.......
Pour it in, run for 200 miles, and thoroughly flush without thermostat installed.
A 195 thermostat is the factory recommendation.

73wagon just to be clear are you saying that my current fan may cool it at idle?

was also thinking of putting a new thermostat do i use a 195* one?

RockRollin Hard to say what shape the clutch is in till its inspected. I'd wait on the clutch. Fact is the flex fan may cool it at idle with a new radiator and a good flush, but if problems persist it's the next thing to go imo.

73wagon ok I ordered the radiator that you recommended today! Says it shold be here by Tuesday and then Ill get it put in.

Do you think I should go ahead and order the fan as well or install the radiator and see if it runs cool?

If I order the fan that you recommended should I buy a new clutch for it?

RockRollin The catch can is a passive tank, meaning it stores expanded coolant so it can be drawn back into the radiator when contraction occures when the cooling system cools down. So any tank would work as long as the feed line does not leak and the end in the tank stays below the level of the coolant. The stock tank in my 90 mounts next to the radiator against the radiator core support. So anything that fits that space, and holds around a half gallon would work.
Gixxerphil has a thread titled "parting a 78 wagon" er something like that, could check with him or find another used one at a salvage yard. Bjs offroad has an aluminum tank but it's kinda pricey. There are surely many from other vehicles at a salvage yard that would work.

73wagon Those flex fans claim to add hp to your engine because they cause less resistance or something like that.

I take your word for it, so I guess I need to install a clutch and then get the 7 blade fan you pointed me at?

RockRollin That's the same radiator I've been running for 2-1/2 years, cools well no issues. You definitely don't have a clutch. I have heard of a few who prefer the flex fan, but a whole lot more that curse them. The 7 blade stock fan with clutch will move more cfm at idle than a flex fan, and work the engine less at speed, that has been proven.

73wagon Yeah i like that radiator, you think that one would be a good one?

I looked and I dont think mine has a clutch, I could be wrong, but I dont see one. What did you think about that flex fan from summit?

That fan looks like what you have now. This is a stock fan, you will want a haydon clutch to go with it if the attached clutch test bad. This is a good price as well.
The catch can allows for expansion/contraction to happen while keeping the radiator full.
