Whining engine noise-->tensioner assembly AND A/C compressor?
2007 Compass Ltd 2.4L engine making whining noise in idle and at all speeds. Took it to my usually-trustworthy local shop. They replaced tensioner assembly and noise improved but did not completely go away. They say it also has a bad bearing in A/C compressor and '07 Compass A/C compressor is unusual because it has no clutch, spins all the time and is run by the one single serpentine belt. True? Any advice... suggestions... opinions?

Probably the alternator decoupler worn out. They use these nowadays to prevent belt slips, "whiplash or slap-back" etc. You can buy just the decoupler but depending on how many miles you have on that alternator it might be wise to replace both due to cost. Also to remove and replace the decoupler you need a decoupler wrench. Most auto stores will rent these for next to nothing. You can test the decoupler by pulling the alternator, spinning it by hand in the normal travel direction and it should be smooth and will spin the alternator shaft. When spun in the opposite direction it should spin freely without turning the alternator shaft, hence decoupling it. This accounts for an overrunning belt on deceleration. A bad decoupler may not feel rough per se but it will lock to some extent in the free spinning direction (opposite its normal travel while on the car).
