TSB 21-011-08: Manual Transmission - Bad Synchros

So my 08 Patriot is going in for a tranny rebuild due to a bad 5th gear synchro. Apparently I am not the first one at my dealership to experience the issue either. Anyone else have a 5-Speed Manual and experience this failure?
At 6300kms this is a pretty crummy issue to be facing...

I only have 3k miles with the 5 speed and no problems yet. A bit difficult to get in to reverse sometimes though.

My Wrangler had the hard to get into reverse problem since I bought it (new.) Its a different transmission altogether though. At least you guys don't have to worry about a stiff rubber seal on yours in the mornings, the AX5s suck for that reason. I haven't heard of this problem on Calibers, but I'll do some looking for you. I've found relations to a "clicking noise". maybe related?

The tough shift into reverse is because they saved $10/unit by not including a synchro for the reverse gear. Common in cheaper, older cars, but I was surprised by them not including it in this. Probably the same on the Wrangler you mentioned.

It's definitely not a "click", it's a hard grind before the gear engages.
Dealer has ordered a new synchro and gear set. Will be here in a week apparently. Hopefully the tranny isn't full of metal shavings by then...

Iv'e never seen a manual trans with a reverse synchro. Why would you need it? youre not between gears going into reverse. Synchro's line up gears to shift smoothly.

*UPDATE*
Jeep went in for the 5th Gear Synchro and gear today. They pulled the tranny out and the guy doing the work went back to the computer to look up some info and discovered there is now a TSB saying to replace 3rd, 4th and 5th synchros and gears.
Needless to say my jeep is gonna spend a week up on a hoist while they wait for parts to ship up from the states.

Thanks for catching that Dr. Grinch! TSB 21-011-08 was just released that covers this.

I sometimes have the same problem...I put it back in neutral, push the clutch in and let it out real fast a few times and it goes right in reverse on the next try.

I think Chrysler should band over, put their finger in the hole and call for a mandatory recall, if they want to save some dignity.

i have 97 five speed SATURN bought new, and now has 215K miles. I never had gear problem, i never replaced clutch and never replaced the original transmission fluid.

It is sad that patriot 5-speed has bad sunchros. There should be no excuse from Chrysler. I just personally fear that 90% of dealer tech or inexperienced when comes to trany and they will f** up more when you ask them to fix it.

I know that Chrysler will take the hit on quality for this but in all fairness it's a vendor quality problem. Assuming that Chrysler only assembles the trans someone on the line would have a hard time spotting a bonding problem on the metals.

46,000 miles on my 07 FD1 5spd Patriot, and I have to say I dont think that I have ever had a problem with reverse. Does your clutch catch high on the pedal or does it grab closer to the floor? (ie is there a full engine / tranny seperation prior to shifting?)

Latest update - Still don't have my vehicle back yet. They have ordered a new bell housing (old one was leaking) and are still waiting on the 3rd and 4th gear and synchro kits. The shop I deal with is huge and has a transmission specialist on staff. He showed me the tranny and what the issue was. You could see obvious slippage and grinding on the blocker ring, and some slight wear on the gear as a result. The bell housing had also been leaking onto the plastic splash guard underneath and has discolored it some. He didn't think that was the cause of the issue, just an unrelated problem.
Interestingly, he said the transmission shares many common features and design of the SRT4 Neon tranny, but isn't as heavy duty. I was actually fairly impressed with how well built it did look overall. I don't think it's a Chrysler issue, I think it's a junk supplier parts issue.

@jeeptown - I was wrong, you are correct, there are no Synchro's on reverse. The issue we are having is the junk blocker rings most likely. I also think the gearbox desperately needs a short throw shifter though. Reverse is just way too far over and back...
