Add Kenwood single band Ham radio. Good enough for off-road Jeep Club comms.

I am about half way through installing a dual band radio in the jeep. TYT TH7800. Radio body is mounted under the passenger seat, head unit below my switch pod, antenna on top of third brake light, and external speaker in the drivers roll bar cover.

I have everything pretty much where it goes, but have to route/ clean up a few more wires. Basically just need to do the external speaker wire and head unit wire. I also need to terminate the ground wire I added to the antenna base to finish everything up.

The antenna placement is going to be an issue. You have absolutely no RF ground, therefore no ground plane.

If you add a braided ground strap (the wider the better), it will help a lot. Just a ground wire won't do it. Ideally, you need to get it to the frame.

My set up is not ideal, but so far seems to be working. I used a 10g wire to ground the antenna to the body. I have been listening to different frequencies and every thing sounds pretty good. I am able to receive NOAA from Waco in Groesbeck (~45mi) Palestine in Groesbeck (~45mi). Until I am able to program all the channels and settings into the radio I am pretty limited on what I can find. Once I get everything programmed I plan on having it checked with an SWR meter and making adjustments as needed.

I completed the physical install yesterday and was just poking around to see what I could hear. NOAA is probably not a good way to test receive distance as I am sure they are pumping out the power, but they do transmit 24/7.

Doc, you can listen on a coat hanger. RX is nothing special.

Have you put at minimum a SWR meter on it? Best would be an antenna analyzer. That 10GA wire is a fine electrical ground but a really horrible RF ground and what you need is a good RF ground.

I would program 146.52 which is national simplex to do a quick SWR check and then a couple of local repeaters to see if anyone can hear you. (I'm assuming you have a ham license)

I am working on getting my tech so not in a rush to tx yet. I usually use CB and have a portable for when we wheel. I picked up this because when we do the PINS run there is no cell service and the distances are to far for emergency services with CB. While I am working on getting my tech it is my understanding that rx is fair game as well as emergency situations calling for help.

New Teraflex balljoints installed - surprised at how easy the job went. Stock lowers on both sides were bad at 40k miles.

Got her nekked. Built a cart for the hard top this year rather than hanging it over the wife’s car in the garage.

Dislodged the annoying tension spring in the rear seat headrest. Now, when the rear seat is folded down, the tension spring headrest doesn't deform the front seats pockets.

Replaced the rear pad and rotors. I was at 50,500 miles... evidently, the rear pads made it to about the 50k mark.
