tj compared to 2012 jk

I am considering trading in my 2003 inca gold sport for a 2012 rubi.

the tj has a dpg ultimate kit and rides on 33 x 12.5 bfg muds on dick cepek dc2 rims.
the tj has been a great ride and I love it to death, but I found a great deal on the rubi and I am seriously tempted at this point.

The rubi will not be my DD but it will see hwy mileage as well as a good bit of offroad action. I also will be modding it as time progresses.
looking for feedback preferably from people who have owned both.

I am not looking for the cookie cutter answers all the mags are saying about the 12's.

more interested in reliability issues, problems, seat of the pants driving experiences off road etc.

the jeep will see mostly dirt trails, sugar sand and mud when off road.

How do you like your 2012? let me know!
Thanks

I don’t have a 2012 yet but I know you’re going to love it, especially the Rubi. I’ve owned two TJ’s and they are great Jeeps but the JK’s are for the most part a huge improvement. The only thing I miss the most from my ‘04 Rubi is how I could drive that Jeep through a maze and come out unscathed, not so with the JKU’s, but that’s the only thing I’ll miss.

It's a little soon to compare the reliability of the 2012 to the TJ.

Well, I don't even know where to start. I think the biggest thing you'll notice from a driveablity perspective is how quiet it is and and how solid everything feels. The rest is off-road performance. You'll like the lockers and sway bar disco.

I have a 2011 JKUR and my GF has a 2006 TJ Sport. The TJ rides more like a Jeep to me. Just my opinion it is actually more fun to put around in. But the JK is a huge step up in ride and off road perfromance.

Coming from a '99 TJ sport on 33's to a '12 JK Rubi:

• The electronic throttle and light clutch will take some getting used to. The 3.6L is definitely more powerful than the 4.0L, but the feedback from the throttle and clutch is zero. Gotta' admit, I've stalled twice now. Could be bc I just got it last night, though
• SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE! It's beyond compare.
• Ingress and egress are a lot easier without the foot-tall door sill.
• You will have information overload from all the new gadgets to play with, especially if you get the 430N/730N stereo. That's why JKs don't wave: they're too business playing with their farkles.
• Upgraded Infinity stereo sounds AWESOME — the 8" subwoofer actually provides musical lows, not like the boomy ones of the past and other OEM systems. I'm an audiophile and it's definitely up there in terms of factory systems after tweaking the 3-band EQ and fader a bit.
• During shifting, the revs seem to hold for a second after letting off the throttle, causing you to sound like a n00b at driving stick to passers by. Definitely less responsive throttle than the TJ's cable-operated system, but I got used to it very quickly.
• It bringz da POWAZ!!!

Just my observations so far.

You make it sound like he's going from a covered wagon to the international space station.

Well just got my rubi 2 door last night. 50 miles on it today, copared to my ol 66 and older 47 its like going from the stoneage to George Jetsons days. Took it to my mechanic frieds shope later we will put it up on the rack just to get a good view of whats under it. get a good idea of what armor I will get then Going off road right after I type this just to feel how the 4:1 low and the 4:11 with autos 3.56 first gear feels.

since these motors and trans are all new the jury is out on "how they hold up"

They are not cheep, but hell you only live one time.

222Doc I can just feel your excitement by the way you try to put sentences together along with you spelling. Best to slow down or you’ll total your Jeep on it’s first off road trip.

I test drove a 12 JKUR and traded my TJ the next day for the one I drove. I realized that the 65mph tops on the highway with my 03 tj SE with enough armor to plow through a hoard of zombies 3.5 in lift 33 tires and tones of all the good suspension parts just wasn't working anymore. There were things it lacked. Lockers, rear disc brakes, 4-1 xfer skid plates and a motor with decent power. I realized that when my parents needed to get into the jeep it was a huge struggle. I actually felt bad. So I took them to see the potential jeep. They got into it nicely. And it already had 33's with 2 in lift that the dealer put on. (Rap** me by the way) But I love it. It rides so nice. It will blow your mind. Plus it was nice to pass someone at 80mph on the highway with very little struggle. Make sure to get the 4:10's (if getting the auto). I'm planning on running 35's on 4:10's when the tires are toast.

I loved my jeep and I do miss it. It was so bad a** but I needed the 12 G's down on the Rubi. Another thing that I love is that I can actually haul stuff in it. The back of the TJ never had enough room to camp.

Hope this helps. And yes you only live once and you can't take anything with you.

I'm right there with ya...considering the transition from my 2005 to a 2012. I'm on the forum but I agree...sitting in a new JK was very spaceship like and I immediately wanted one. My wife had to drag me from the dealership...she probably was justified...

I'm curious as people own them how the new pentastar puts down...I hope it can hold it's own. Oh and if you see me in the audio section I can vouch the new system is close to my aftermarket set up and that's awesome.

If anyone has comments about the manual please chime in. I know earlier JKs had clutch issues.

iPhone app user; excuse typos...thanx.

I drove a manual while testing. I wasn't too impressed with it. My knee was practically in my chest before it engaged. Didn't like that too much. The auto is smooth and comfortable to drive. But its up to you. Test side by side and see what works for you.

I spoke with a guy at a dealership back home. Turns out we had mutual friends. Anyways he told me the new motor had gone through enough miles to go to the moon and back 8 times. He was excited to talk about it. LOL Well at least it comes with a pretty good warranty. Good luck
