Tire carrier

About to upgrade to new tires/wheels on my 08 jk. Don't know anything about the tire carrier. How big of a tire/wheel can I put on the stock carrier without damage? Also can you upgrade to a bigger carrier without changing out the stock rear bumper?

It's pretty much a safe bet that if you go over the stock Rubi tire size (32x10.5), that an aftermarket carrier is recommended. Sure, there are people on here running 35's on the stock carrier, but too many have busted welds and such on their rear gates for me to tell anyone to risk it.

And if you want to keep your stock bumper, you can run something like the OR-Fab or Genright tire carriers on the body.

I just finished the install of the OR-Fab carrier on mine this weekend.

And here's the Genright. You can get it in steel or aluminum.

You can do a few things to fit a larger tire on the stock carrier (no bigger than 35", IMO).

I used a 1.5" wheel spacer because I had one lying around, to space it away from the tailgate/bumper. If you do not happen to have one:

MBRP Tire Carrier Relocation Bracket

And more importantly:

Daystar Tailgate Bumpstops - these will keep your tire from flopping around and popping welds on your tailgate. A lot of guys will recommend a tailgate reinforcement kit that is available, which won't hurt, but I did fine without it.

As a matter of fact, it was Jason from Krawl who gave me the sweet deal on my OR-Fab tire carrier in the first place!

x2. He got me mine week before last. Installed last Monday, excellent product, very sturdy. Major PITA install, but its on there and not going anywhere. Also, I couldn't fit my 35 on my stock tire carrier without the relocation bracket.

Looking at the Or Fab myself
Can it be removed and returned to stock
Down the line if I purchase something else
Or don't like it?

Can't return to stock easily, you have to drill a hole through the body on the exterior of the jeep to mount the striker for the tire carrier.

That is some damn good looking swiss cheese. I wish someone would go ahead and make me a set of rear fender/armor so I can drill more holes in mine....

Dayum. Just send the parts you cut out my way. I'd probably be about halfway through having a complete JK to 'dink' with....

Check out AEV's rear tire carrier. Works with the stock bumper and no drilling the tub.
