Spare tire carrier choices

I've read a bit about different brands ranging from $129-$700. Any solid benefits of one over the other?

Smittybuilt is the cheapest, even found one on CL local for $100. Should I steer clear?

Depends on your budget. I'm not a fan of SB stuff. I have some but...
I have the Teraflex. Expensive, yes but stout with no rattles or squeeks. Very smooth gate action with the new hinges. I like very much. Just didn't like paying for it.

Just Hunt!

I have a Smittybilt Atlas bar and carrier system. Its been on for nearly a year, I think...just came back from a big trip of bouncing the JK up and down a lot of rough climbs.....not a rattle, and the gate never unlatched itself.
Carries my spare, a hi-lift and two Jerry cans and has a built in tow hitch.
I know some SB products have some QC issues, but my bar bolted straight on and its been a good piece of gear. It is heavy though, just so you know.

Leigh

Keeping a large spare on the stock carrier mounted to the tailgate can cause the tailgate welds to break and the hinges to sag. The metal on the carrier itself can also fatigue and break. Getting an aftermarket carrier is a great idea.

The benefit to a tub mounted carrier is that many will maintain the one handed opening and closing of the tailgate and tire carrier. The other benefit is that you can run whatever bumper you want without being limited to the ones that have a carrier available. If you find a carrier/bumper combo that you like, they can often be the same or similar price to some tub mounted carriers. The Teraflex Tire Carrier and Adjustable Mount is really popular but also pricey. We also have a few different options for Rear Bumpers with Carriers if you see any of those that you like. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in a quote on anything!
