Question about radio updates.

My 2012 wrangler has the same factory nav radio that my 2011 grand cherokee has. Would the software update that I bought 2 years ago for the grand cherokee work in the wrangler? I know there is a newer version but the wrangler was never updated at all. Just curious if I could save myself some money.

Thanks

Are you referring to the map database? If so, those are tied to the VIN and will not work on any other vehicle other than the one it was purchased for.

That sucks having to buy 2 separate map updates for the same radio. Maybe its time to upgrade. I have been looking at the stinger heigh10 radio for the JK.

Those updates are not tied to a VIN if you purchased an update DVD.
I've worked Jeep dealership parts, and those disks were sold right off the shelf with no VIN info attached or needed. The only reason they would ask for a VIN is to verify which type nav radio it is.

Now...IF both radios are of the RHR variety, then yes, that same disk can be used (though technically per the EULA, that's software piracy). 2011-2013 GC RHR and 2011-2015 JK RHR all used the same one.
However if they are the RHB type, then no, they are not compatible.

Here's the RHR disk page whith the list of vehicles that disk is compatible with.

So both radios are RHB models. The update kit did not come with a disk. It came with a usb adapter that accepts sd cards. One card is for the maps and the other is a software update.

I just went to the link you provided Kruzin and there are no more updates available for the 2012 wrangler. I did contact them but not holding out much hope. It is kinda strange that the same model radios don't take the same updates.

They're not exactly the same software-wise between '11 and '12.
In '12 they added anti-theft features to the RHBs like a PIN code to disable the radio if it was moved to a different vehicle.
I have no idea if the map updates would be the same.
