New JK Key Options

Hi, I bought a 2014 Sahara and only one key came with.
The dealesrships nearby want $160-175 for a key and $40-60 to code
A locksmith said he could cut and code a key but no remote locks for $60

anyone have any more economic (cheaper ) options?

Usually the issue with a locksmith making a key is it is a clone of the one working key. It does the job but you can't self program additional keys.

Also not all locksmiths can actually make it work. Several members here have gone that route to find that the keys didn't work properly and ended up going to the dealer anyways.

The new key from the dealer hurts but is usually the smartest choice.

Another option that is somewhat risky is you can get a five dollar key made. Tape your working key to the steering column near the ignition lock cylinder. The risk is it makes it easier for thieves and your insurance will not be happy about it.

New JK Key Options

Whats wrong with a clone key for $60? Ive been using it for years. no issues.

Who said you cant duplicate off a cloned key? I dont see why that would be an issue since jeeps keys are so basic.

I also have a 5 dollar key hidden but thats only good for opening the doors. Its not coded so it wont turn the engine on.

I didn't say you can't duplicate a clone, I said you can't self program a blank key without 2 working unique keys. A clone is not unique, it's an exact copy.

A JK has 8 key slots available in the SKIM module. with 2 unique keys, the owner can program up to 6 spares. I use Ilco blanks. Once a locksmith cut those keys, I was able to self program the blanks and now have keys hidden everywhere.

I found this out after I lost one of the original keys, cost me almost $300 for a new key. After that, I bought quality blanks, had them cut and programmed them myself.

Jeep keys may look basic but every one of them have a chip in them which requires programming to the vehicle.

Found a local locksmith who will duplicate the key with fob for about half of the nearby dealerships.
I'm going to roll the dice and hope for a good result.

I'll post the results good or bad

You can also get a key off ebay or amazon and get it cut then use Alfaobd to program it yourself.

Can you confirm that Alfaobd works to program a key for a 2016 jku? Do you have instructions on how to do this?

You can go to this link it has a list of stuff that can be done with Alfa app. Its a Ram forum but should be the same. I have used the app o both trucks and the jeep and worked for everything I have needed.

I used the "Chrysler Pin Puller" apk that I just downloaded from play store and it did find the key pin code for my jeep. I verified that it is the correct code by going by the jeep dealer today and they confirmed it was the correct key code. I have downloaded the Alfaobd and am in the process of getting a key cut. I will report back if it works. I have an old elm327 based interface. it may be too old to work so I may have to do some research and get a newer one.
For me its all about the fun of trying to get something to work on my own rather than having to have to rely on dealer/locksmith.. Usually it ends up costing me twice as much to figure it out on my own than to just have the dealer cut me a key. But hey, what fun is that :-)
