Keyless entry....on another JK!!

My wife was parked in a parking lot next to or near another JK and when she went to unlock our Jeep she unlocked the other Jeep and set of its alarm. The other owner was a little freaked out. Can the dealer recode the keys? Hopefully this is not a common occurrence, otherwise I better trust my fellow JK owners.

It happens. I've seen it with a Toyota Camry, a Chevy Suburban, and a 300C in the last four years or so.

Odds are low though, and even if it opens it, it doesn't seem to start. I'd say your odds are still more likely to have a smash and grab than another key unlocking.

Yeah, the companies are limited on the number of frequencies they can use, so eventually you'll end up unlocking someone elses vehicle.

In highschool I could use the actual key to get into my buddie windstar with my windstar keys, I couldn't start it though, would have been alot more fun.

That's nothing. You should go to a manufacturer organized event for owners. If it's dark and they don't label parking rows/spots, people end up using their remotes to find the vehicles. At that point, it's a shame when someone's remote triggers a car near you just as you happen to push your button.

Trust

You can ABSOLUTELY trust you fellow Jeep owners. We are a helpful and loyal bunch. Now, I have to admit we might want to take her for a quick "off mall" trip, especially if yours is lifted and/or has different stuff than ours.

Back in HS a friend's Nissan had a valet key that would open about half the Nissan we tried it on.

Ahhh... a mis-spent youth.

Drinking for the cause.

Mechanical keying is very limited in combinations. In some instances a locksmith uses "tryout" keys. Figure out a couple of wafers and then tryout a boxful of keys. The remote should be much more rare.
