Thinner oil loses viscosity sooner than normal weight oil.

I've had mine since the end of April and just went over 5000. I think half of that was backtracking down dead end Forest Service Roads.

Do you have something to support that claim?

I read up on some oil viscosity articles upon learning my JK specifies 5W-20 weight oil. I would have to find it again to post it here. The article said that hot driving conditions in the South I would need somewhat thicker oil to protect the engine better... at least that's what I understood from reading it.

I personally use 5W-30 Mobile-1 synthetic oil, but never felt comfortable about 5W. All my other cars I use 10W-30 Mobile-1.

If you look back same exact engine for 2002/3/4 models FSM specifies higher weight... for latter year models 5W-20... and this is designed to reduce engine friction in order to increase fuel mileage.

The 5W represents how eaily oil flows, thereby helps cold cranking start in extreme cold weather. Well, in the South it doesn't get too cold in the winter. May be 32-35 degrees in January.

I just turned 20k on my way to a wheeling trip last weekend, no problems so far, but I've only had it for a few months and about 2k miles. I like it

53k on my '07 Rubi and no problems in my ownership. I bought it 10 months ago as a weekend/beach/ski rig with 48k on it. I commute daily 120 miles in a tsx though, which is just a little too far for the Jeep.

If that was driving backwards "backtracking" does your odometer get lower? Ha Ha Like on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

My JK has 37K and I haven't had problems with it (except for stuff I've altered). I drive about 25K a year, so I plan on hitting 100K in about 2.5 years. Happy Trails.

I'm using 5W-20 synthetic and its pretty hot where I live/wheel; but I think the engineers that set the specification for the oil would have considered the entire country and the heat range. Otherwise how would they have come up with the lifetime engine warranty.

One foot in the grave & one foot on the gas pedal!!
