Differential fluid change.......

Does anyone else think that it's bullshi#$ that I have to drop $320.00 (plus tax) to change the fluid in both the front and back differentials every 15k? Dude! that's a car pymnt every year!!!!! I'm seriously considering selling it and getting an FJ Cruiser.

Thats ridiculous, find a different mechanic. I just had both front and rear done ( I know, I'm lazy ) for an hours labor ($80) plus fluid cost.

Why don't you just do it yourself? It takes twenty minutes tops and if you can tie your shoelaces its at about the same skill level.

My dealer quoted me $200 out the door every 18k.

And since we're on the subject.....is there a drain plug, or do I have to pull the cover? I thought I saw one on my rear axle on the bottom below the yoke.

Umm you literally need ONE tool (3/8 ratchet) and an oil catch pan. The cost of the fluid and the ratchet and doing it yourself will probably be under $40.

You literally pull the drain plug and let the fluid come out, put the drain plug back in. Pull the fill plug and fill it with new fluid and put the fill plug back in.

15 minutes done.

But hey if you wanna spend $300, its your dough.

I'll do it for you for 1/2 that!

Seriously it's minimal tools and time, you could do it really cheap, might take 1/2 hr. - 45 min. tops, for both.

FJ Cruisers have differentials, too. No difference there. Is there some other reason you would prefer the FJ Cruiser?
"No time" = you just don't want to do it. Have you ever watched a 1/2 hour tv show? In that time you could have easily changed the fluid in one differential. The second one would be even quicker, as you would be already set up. Yes, it would take a little longer if your axles don't have drain plugs.
If you have to pay to get stuff done on your Jeep, it would be no different on the FJ Cruiser.

wow! You complain about the cost being too high. You threaten to ditch the JK for an FJ... And when you get the advice to do it yourself (easier than changing the engine oil), you throw out the "I don't have time" card.

Is 30 minutes of your time worth $320? If you make $640/hr then obviously your time is more valuable and you can afford to have someone else do it.

for details and info on our JK's, check out

I think the mechanic/dealer your using sees a big huge IM STUPID stamp on your forehead. Man up, do it yourself your already on one of the most valuable information sites on the web for jeeps. And basically there is people holding your hand telling you how to do it. I seriously doubt you dont have time tell that girlfriend, computer, xbox or tv that you need to spend sometime on your number one priority. YOUR JEEP

end of story

Hey guys, give him a break. He doesn't want to break out a half-a-tool and turn a nut 5 or 6 times around in a circle.

He also just doesn't have time for preventative maintenance so it's not like his Jeep will last very long anyway, he should get rid of it. If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say they didn't have time... it's even better when you hear it from a stay-at-home soccer mom. Guess what... everyone has to go to the dry cleaners, everyone has to go grocery shopping, everyone has dentist appointments, and most people have kids. And most people get it all done despite the fact they have a job.

Who do you think you are? FDR? Mother Theresa? Stephen Hawking?

GO BUY A HONDA! Or better yet, TAKE A BUS!
