2013 JKU No start- Not even clicking!

I've got a 2013JKU with about 47K on it. 6 speed. Earlier today I go to start the jeep and it makes a terrible noise on starting, like potentially the starter isn't disengaging. I shut down the car, restart with no noise, and drive away. Chalk it up to a fluke event.

30 minutes later I'm at the bank, go to start the jeep and NOTHING. Not even a clicking like it's a low battery. I sit there for a bit, try starting in neutral, nada. Eventually I'm able to start it (making the weird noise as before) and I drive home. I park it in the garage and walk inside.

About 4 hours later I walk outside and start the jeep. On the first start I get that grating noise, but the engine starts. I turn it off and start another 6 times within the span of a minute. Every time, it starts with absolutely no problems.

My relays and fuses are good. My battery is also good. At this point, I feel that this is a starter issue. I feel that if the issue was electric (ECU, Ignition Switch) the failure would be a binary it works or it doesn't. Additionally, there wouldn't be a mechanical noise on some starts. I checked the OBD II for codes, and I'm getting none.

I've ordered a new starter already, and I'm planning on cleaning all contacts/ connections when it shows up and I do the install. Is there anything else it could be?

I'll add: I do a decent amount of mudding/ puddles. Is it possible there's debris buildup?

I'm going to guess it's the starter... even Mike agrees

Sounds like the bendix gear might be damaged.

Wanted to go ahead and bump this just in case anyone has a similar issue.

As RockyClymer had suggested, the bendix gear was bad. The starter gear was basically free to move forward and backwards, which explains why on the last start of the jeep I could hear the starter continuing to spin after the engine was started. Probably blew the starter motor too, something tells me it's not designed to go at 3500 RPM.

Buying a new starter wound up being the most difficult part. I guess because the jeep is so new, there aren't too many people who've needed to replace it. Mopar wound up wanting $280 for a brand new one, so I wound up going with a used starter from automotix.com for ~$100.

Install was easy, soaked the bolts in PB blaster the night before. Wound up pulling the drive shaft to get some working room. Unbolted the old one, dropped in the new one. Wonderful relief to have a vehicle that starts again. Been rolling strong for about 2 months now.
