Just purchased a 2007 and noticed this evening the spare tire size is 245/75R16 and on the ground are 265/70R17s. Should I upgrade immediately to a 265/70R17 spare?
If you want a spare that can be used on the highway you should have one that matches the overall diameter of the other tires. Having one tire that is smaller than the others will make the traction control go crazy. You would probably be ok with what you have if you are only going to use it to limp down the road at low speed.
Your 245/75R16 is about 1 1/8" smaller overall diameter than the 265/70R17
Rush immediately? Maybe.
You have a 16" wheel on the carrier and 17"s on the axles. You "can" put a 265/75r16 on your spare 16 to get to the same diameter as your 265/70r17s for a cheap, quick fix.
Or perhaps you're in the market to upgrade all 5 tires and wheels at the same time? FWIW, a matching spare opens up a 5 tire rotation plan and can yield 20% longer tread life.
Thank you all for the quick feedback. I like the idea of a 265/75R16 on the current spare rim. Not sure how old the tire is. I bought the vehicle this past Saturday from a local car dealer.
