what type of hydraulic lifters in the 4.0

Does anyone know what type of lifters the 4.0 engine have? I know they are hydraulic but are they flat-tappet hydraulic or roller hydraulic?

If 90% sure they are flat tappet design, hence our noisy valvetrains!

someone plaese confirm....



I sure hope so anyway, If thats a roller cam/lifters in there making all that racket that's pretty awful Both hot rods run roller cams, and the valve train is silky smooth silent on em'.

Just as Flexy TJ guessed the service manual shows as flat tappets in pictures-doesn,t really say in print but the cost difference is probably a deciding factor.

Large vacuum leak sucking all the dead presidents out of my wallet.

The 4.0L has flat tappet lifters. I just did my lifter replacement job last month (Dec 2016).

Flat tappet lifters. While rebuilding my 4.0 last year I noticed a couple of lobes on the cam were going flat. That definantly would cause my ticking.
01 4.0l with 150k

Sorry for the long delay. Re: quieting the engine, replacing the lifters (I used a stock replacement I bought from NAPA) didn't really change the sound of the engine. The stock lifters tend to create a slight (very quiet and steady) rattle in the engine. I would equate to the sound of a gently agitated can of peanuts shaken by hand. And I will caveat that with I hear most of the engine noise in my stock 4.0L valvetrain is from the timing chain -- you can confirm this with an automotive stethoscope pressed on the timing cover while the engine is running. (Do this VERY CAREFULLY - You don't want to get bitten by the fan!!)


I haven't seen the stethoscopes in NAPA lately; I have seen them on the ((well known nation-wide discount dealer)) for around $10. I find them to be very useful in locating where engine noise is loudest, and that CAN help you locate the general origin of engine noises.
