What skid plates are essential for offroading? And HID headlights?

Hey all,
Can anyone tell me what skid plates are essential for offroading? I already have a steering column skid. And my 2004 X already comes with an oil pan skid. Anything else? And does anyone know where I can get HID headlights?

are you looking for true HIDs? (like $500+) or just HID-appearance bulbs?

not sure about "essential"...

but I would recommend a couple:

1. front diff guard
2. engine/oil pan skid
3. rock sliders

other items:

1. rear diff guard
2. steering skid
3. stonger gas tank skid
4. belly-up t-case skid (also gains ground clearance)
5. front LCA skids

mainly front diff. it will take a lot of abuse. and i mean a lot

THe skids you need/want should depend on where and what kind of wheeling you do.

Generally though, the front diff, oil pan/engine and rockers are a good idea.

You can do things the right way or the wrong way.
Or you can do it MY way...which is like the wrong way, only faster.

So, the front diff takes the abuse head on. I haven't hit my diffs on anything, but I know I'm choosing lines to avoid a diff hit and often not doing a line because it might come close--so I think I'm being too careful and missing out. Diff skid would give me a better margin, at least in my head.

What about the back side of the diff? Do I only need to protect the front from a head on hit, or should I look for a diff skid that will protect it in reverse, or when getting pulled out backward? A lot of the rear diff skids I see cover the rear of the pumpkin--is that because they need protection in reverse or is it because it looks good

The gas tank is mounted low on a TJ. Unless you have a lot of lift you need to put something like a Skidrow, Kilby or TBT armor on it. If you drive on a lot of rocks or rock shelves you'll slam the gas tank coming off rocks even if you're careful.

I would also invest in a good set of rock sliders. I personally like the design that covers the sides and has side bars extending out to protect the fenders in the event of a flop. There are plenty of well designed units out there. I have Shrockbars but TBT, A-Z and several others are basically similar designs. Mine paid off when I tipped my jeep over on its right side several months ago. No damage, just some impressive rash on the sliders.

Agree with armored diffs--either plate steel covers like Crane or Blue Torch Fab, or high quality bolt on armor. I have Blue Torch covers but I really like the TBT "cage" type diff armor and may be going that route soon.

As has been stated, the type of armor you need depends on where and how you wheel. I consider the above the minimum for the wheeling on rocks here in AZ.

i don't have any aftermarket skids right now, but i'm planning on a front/rear diff and steering box as of right now.

as for the HIDs, I think I can hear Oman comin' along now...he'll tell 'ya what's up...

are you asking about the back side of the front diff? or where the rear diff cover goes?

the diff housing itself is VERY sturdy, and I wouldn't be worried about it...

the rear diff cover can also be replaced, but most people don't hit it near as often...

my armor is a "safety net"...I try to dodge rocks by picking the right lines, but the armor allows me to screw that theory up and just bounce off of one...

Front Lower Control Arm Skids

I've now come across quite a few Jeeps with busted up lower control arms...It pretty much sucks to repair one I've heard

I thought you needed a SYE kit to do a belly up skid plate??? And I can vouch for a oil pan skid saw in use the other day

definetly get an oil pan skid, Especially if you have a stock TJ, i hit mine this weekend pretty hard and wish i would have had the skid

It seems like the first skids to buy should be the front diff skid and the gas tank skid. Then you should get armor for everything else.

There's the batsignal - there will be boobie lights in here soon.

don't a lot of the gas tank skids require a body lift?

If one were to do... say a 3.5 RE SF lift and did an SYE at the same time would they have to have another SYE built down the road if they wanted to do a belly up?
