Water pump and thermostat, gasket sealant?

I'm replacing the water pump and thermostat on my 97' TJ and I'm seeing quite a bit of inconsistency on use of sealant on the gaskets. Some aren't using any, some are using sealant on one side of the gasket just to hold it in place. One guy used a liquid Teflon tread sealant on the water pump bolts. Does anyone the correct procedure? I watched a handful of YouTube videos on the subject. Thanks!

Also, moving further down the YouTube rabbit hole, I saw a few vids where guys are saying to replace the harmonic balancer pully when the radiator is out and everything is pulled off the front of the engine. Theres plastic in the assembly that ages, and when you replace that pully you might as well replace the front seal while you have it off. Any thoughts on this? I was planning on driving this today and if I have to go buy more parts is going to throw a wrench into getting this back on the road.

Use strictly gaskets on the cooling system.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

Felpro makes a nice water pump and thermostat gasket that has a silicone impregnated ring around it you might look at as opposed to the standard paper gasket.
