TJ immobiliser problem

Hi Guys, have a really irritating problem. I parked the heep last night, tried to start this morning but the key fob will not disarm immobilizer. The sentry light on the dash still stays on no matter how many times I push the unlock button or how close I hold the Key Fob. Tried replacing the batteries but no luck either. It has done this once before but worked again after much cursing and waiting on the side of the road. The vehicle is a RHD UK spec, built in 97 but sold in 98.

I fitted a new battery a couple weeks ago but there has been no problem until now. Could the ECU have lost the plot and deleted the key codes? Do I have to buy new key fobs or can I have the old ones re-programmed again?

97 models were fitted with immobilisers by (or for) Jeep UK after arrival in the country so it isn't something most people on here will be aware of. The immobilsers are made by May and Schofield. Not sure if the PCM is programmed to recognise the immobiliser or not so not sure right now if it can be easily bypassed.

I know somebody on one of the UK forums had a problem with one and with M&S help I think they were able to get it sorted. I'll have a look and see if I can find the thread. If I can I'll add it here.

EDIT:

Found the thread, on BirtyDastards.com

Seems it was a power fault, and a bad connection at the immobiliser. See the second to last post for the details he was emailed from M&S.

Thanks for the response. The key is black, the key fobs are the standard chrysler ones with 2 buttons - similar I think to the Cherokee ones. Engine will not crank. If I push start it will start and run for a very short time then cut out again.

Thanks Jonny, only just noticed that you are UK based. I was there for a number of years before coming back to Africa 2 years ago. Spent my time there working for a Land Rover specialist near Oxford. Caused an issue amongst the die hards when I turned up in the wrangler.

Thanks guys for all your ideas, as the Heep is my daily driver I had no option but to take it to the only dealer in the country. They are filled up with all the shiney new jeeps but had only seen 4 wranglers in the last 2 years! They interrogated the ecu and identified an open circuit in the immobilser, removed and fixed it too, the keys needed to be re-coded too.

They were also so very helpful in "finding" a fuse missing and fitting a new one (at a premium of course) - Yes the one that was missing is the damned door chime fuse!! Anyway at least it now runs, cant use the seatblet anymore for some reason but I can drive it! $150 later.

Am onto the original immobiliser suppliers too. I want the damn thing outa my vehicle!!

Heard back from the people who installed the unit for Jeep UK. They confirm that the immobiliser can not be removed. They do offer a "piggy-back" touch-Key system that works in parallel with the Key-fobs, if they fail the touch-key will over ride the system.

At least it is an alternative but not as good as deleting the whole kit and caboodle.

You can remove the SKIS system which was fitted to all export TJs from 98-06, for those you need to fit a PCM from a US jeep that never had SKIM fitted. Surely that could be done in a similar fashion for a 97 TJ. I don't know if would be a straight swap, or if there would be any changes needed to be made to the wiring regards the immobiliser, but it may be another option.

Same immobilizer problem please help!!

IMMOBILIZER ISSUE

I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler bought by my family in the UK in 1997. It has an immobilizer integrated into it and came with two remotes when first bought. One remote was lost many years ago and the second has just broken. The jeep is stranded. Does anyone know if the immobilizer can be removed? Today i got two different guys to come plug in computers which was no help as the immobilizer was UK add on. There is an added complication that I shipped the Jeep out of the UK two years ago, i cannot take it to a UK dealer. I am at a total loss, love this car, she has so much more life in her to be defeated by this immobilizer.
