TJ 2002 shuts off in the middle of driving

Hello everyone...I apologize for not getting my profile completed, but I'm just really busy, but need to get this posted to see if anyone can help me.

I have a 2002 TJ sahara 62000 miles, straight six, automatic. I have to be honest and tell you that I know nothing about motors, etc. I have had my jeep for 2 years and have had absolutely NO problems with it. In the last 4 weeks (hot weather/if that makes a difference), I can be driving down the highway at 40, 50, 60 mph and the jeep shuts off. The RPM needle plummets and the jeep starts slowing down. The radio is still on, lights still on and then, all of a sudden, it starts back up and I'm going again. I don't have to turn the ignition key or anything.

If anyone has any information to help me, I would appreciate it. My husband said just drive it until it quits and take to the shop. Is this wise or could it potentially cause additional problems.

Any information will be appreciated.

JLT

I gotta say Boogieman, when I get on jeep forum I always find one of your posts to see what your latest avatar is. Some are just plain genius.

As far as the op, could be a crank sensor.

PCM = Powertrain Control Module.
Intermittent power to the fuel pump?...

Could be loose battery terminals or bad crankshaft position sensor.

Yesterday and today I noticed that I crank the jeep and start to work. I have been in the jeep for 5 to 7 minutes, have gained speed on the highway to 55 and it shuts down. Within 10 seconds it starts up and I continue. The RPN guage goes to 0 and the jeep slows down considerably and then just starts back up. I did pay attention to the cruise and it shuts it off, the a/c gets warm pretty quick but then starts back and I continue on.

Thanks for all the suggestions of possible problems. I would like to add, so that if anyone else sees this thread and has any information, that yesterday and today it has happened within 5 to 7 minutes of starting to work. I would have gained speed on the highway to about 55 and it shuts off. The RPMs go to 0, the cruise shuts off, the jeep starts to slow quickly, the a/c compressor is off. Then, within 10 to 15 seconds it starts up and continues to run.

Do you completely lose all electrical, as in does the radio also shut off when the engine dies? If the radio isn't on when this next happens, immediately turn the radio on and see if it works in that 10-15 second time before the engine restarts.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

Did you resolve the issue???

I hate when these "help me" threads just go dead with no resolution. It makes using the "search" function more time consuming and less productive.
