Tinted Front Windshield

My 06 TJ has the factory tinted front windshield...I've pushed my luck with it since I've had it here in South Florida, and just the other day I got pulled over by a Florida State Trooper over it. Luckily I had the build sheet in the glove box and he read it, and told me that its illegal (which I know)... and said that I need to remove it. Well... I drove on...contemplating removing it all or leaving a visor strip. So talking to a LEO friend about it, he said that the average ticket is about 400 bucks for the tinted window. So I've decided to go with just the visor strip...

Now...according to the laws...the visor strip must not be lower than the AS1 line on the windshield... the problem is, I don't have an AS1 line on my windshield. Can someone measure from the top of the frame down to the AS1 line for me?

And...any tips on removing the old tint? Heatgun? Chemicals? a brick?

ha jk, but i heard of it before. Although if its factory i don't think you can remove it as most factory tint is within the glass.

sounds like dealer applied to me,not factory.to remove it just grab a corner and peel it off, sounds easy don't it.its not that easy, take some time, use plenty of windex with amonia to remove the adhesive.then reapply visor strip.

if at first you don't succeed RELOAD.i carry a .45 because they don't make a .46

There is no tint at all on my windshield. Factory tint would be in the glass, if it is the stick on type you can usually pull it off. Good tint might you might need a razor blade.

You have the build sheet, was it originally sold in Fla? If so, drive it back to the dealer that sold a an illegal vehicle, and insist they make it right. If not, suck it up and pony up the $200 to get a new one installed and be legal.

Never heard of a factory tinted front windshield however, sounds more like a dealer installed option, which means it is probably just film that you can take off.

Like everyone else said, if it's a film then it wasn't from the factory. Factory tint is in the glass and I've never heard of an American car company that tints the front windshield.

You'll need a single edge razor to scrape it off.

Funny you are in FL. The TJ I bought off ebay was out of FL and i had it trucked up to NJ had tint on the windshield. It had tint on the side windows which I knew to remove in NJ but I did not realize there was a light tint on the windshield. The inspection station picked it right out. I scraped and peeled it off.

If it is a factory installed option....I can't see a problem with it....it may be the Cop's interpertation of what the law is.....I would contact a representative of the Court or the DVA and see what their take is on it.

I am a retired Cop and can remember having a different opinion on interpretations than other Cops did....and of course I was always right

down here in fort lauderdale glass shops sell windshields with a strip in the glass for all cars & trucks they give you the option clear or tinted, if you didnt get tint put on over it there wont be a problem you probably ran across a bad cop. go to the swap shop and have em put a 3 inch strip for 10 bucks

My 06 rubicon has factory tint in the front and door glass - it is stated on the as built sheet. It is a very light tint, and you would not realize it unless you were looking for it. It is not a stick on tint.

I just had my front glass replaced and I noticed it did NOT have the slight tint.
I want to find out how much tint is in the glass from the factory, so I can call the insurance company and tell them their glass company screwed up and put in glass that was different than the original.

btw I bet your rubicon has a slight tint too
