Thinking about buying a Jeep

I have a 98 Dodge Dakota now and while I don't have very many miles on it, 44,000, it has been giving me alot of problems and is known for various ongoing suspension problems. And even with dumping alot of money into it it still continues to have issues. All in all it's just becoming more unreliable.

So I was thinking about selling it and getting a jeep. I've always wanted one. Should provide me with much better mileage and hopefully cheaper parts as there are a ton of aftermaket parts out there. I'm always hoping they are easier to work on and more reliable than my truck.

So are there any certain years of Wranglers that should be avoided? Anything I should know about purchasing a used one and what to look for? I figure I have about $10,000 to spend.

What's your current gas mileage?

If you keep your Jeep stock, and if you purchase a 6 cylinder engine... don't look for more than 20 MPG tops at highway speeds with a tailwind.

Avoid 4 cylinder engines (they are excellent engines, just underpowered), try to get a Jeep with a Dana 44. Run a search for a picture of what one looks like. Tell tale sign is a metal fill plug rather than a rubber plug. Sports, Saharas, Rubicons and Rubicon Unlimiteds are a great chance of having a 44.

Any Jeep from '97-'06 is great. YJs are good too... but they have leaf suspension and are a different generation model.

yeah, mileage-wise, I would NOT be expecting a huge change (for the better)

in fact , if you have the v-6 in the dakota, you may actually get less in the TJ, and with the v-8 right around the same depending on how you drive it.

that said, you simply cannot beat the versatility and fun of a JEEP, and I highly recommend having one (or two)

not to get too technical, but you are more likely to find the D35 in the Sports and Sahara's.

True that.. unless it has the 30" wheel and tire group.

Look for a Wrangler with 3.73 gearing and a Dana 44. Also try and get a 6 cyl as the 4 cyl are underpowered. Here is a list of changes that happened over the years: http://www.geocities.com/jeepboy49028/changes.html

my TJ is a rolling heep of tihs at 52k miles with more going wrong on it then the average ferrari and I would NEVER buy one used again, just my experience.

Its been the shop for a total of about 3 months out of the 12 ive owned it, so its reliable 9/12 of the time if you like those odds!

While I agree with your point, if someone MUST buy used, take it to a local trusted mechanic if you are not familiar with the mechanical details of the Jeep. Do this before you sign the papers.

for sure, and check for replaced parts like the radiator, cat, swaybar links, etc cuz they are known to go bad and if theyre replaced you wont have to worry about them down the road.

and buy a warranty please

Yeow. I have an '05 Dakota Quad Cab with V8 and am getting 19 mpg mixed highway/city. My '06 Jeep X isn't getting that much...I haven't checked the mileage on the Jeep, but it ain't 19... I have an auto six banger, if that helps.

I get 15 mpg in town which is a mixed, 50-50 stop n go and highway (60 mph). I would get a Trail Jeep (TJ) with leaf springs, than the old YJ with leaf springs.

Loudog3114, you said to buy warranty, extended warranty I presume... Do I need to buy extended warranty on my 2004 TJ? I didn't get it figuring most of the defects have been fixed since not much has changed with this vehicle.

Same setup here. Im stock everything with 3.73's. 70% of my driving is on highway at 55mph. Best ive ever gotten was 18mpg. And i was trying to get good gas mileage. Not too too bad.

Why are you most likely to find a d35 in a sahara? I got lucky and found out I had a d44 in my sahara when I didn't even know there were dif axles avail.
