Swag Offroad Tailgate Install w/tire carrier

I had been looking at the Swag Offroad drop down tailgate kit for a while and thought it would be a good addition to my LJ. I ordered the kit with the stronger hinges.
The install went pretty easy with very good directions. I thought I had found a mistake in them until Troy at Swag helped me see that I just read the directions backwards.

I used the hinges and supports as directed but changed the latch setup to try out my idea for an on tub tire carrier.

The tire carrier is mounted on the tub with the stock hinges and uses the Swag latch to secure it. It press fits the tailgate into place and so far ZERO rattles.

I figured the stock gate hinges held up the tail gate and the tire to start with so my carrier frame and tire should weigh a little less. The latch pin does not actually hold any weight. I used a bronze bushing in the hole it goes in and got a perfect fit.

I think it turned out pretty good and I now have a spare tire centered on the rear of the Jeep... the offset tire always bothered me for some reason. I've only driven about 50 miles with it mounted so the long haul will tale the tale.

So, what do you guys think?

Indeed, nicely done.

Maybe Troy will come up with a kit like your spare tire carrier.

I built the frame for the tire carrier. The part that the tire bolts to is the stock unit.

The Swag Kit was $179 + shipping.

I have this conversion, the only draw back is the pin will rust after a year, at least mine did. It is pretty hard to open now. other then that it is a very strong well built kit!

LJ-8... awesome. and the tailgate mod is cool too.
might i make a few suggestions for your next mods? flush the tail lights, and move your license plate to the center of the spare tire.

everything looks great. but if you fabbed the tire carrier frame, then you can fab up something stronger than the stock mount. keep that in mind if you plan on going to 35s.

keep up the good work.
