Steering box replacement?

So I just had a local off-road specific shop do a 17" BBK w BMB upgrade along with a Currie Currentlync upgrade on my TJ. I had them do an alignment as well as things were a bit off because of another story*. The owner is super cool and explains anything you ask about. They have a great reputation with all the Jeep clubs in the area which makes sense as they grew organically out of this scene.

The owner said that my steering had a bit of a dead spot (It does and did before as well) and it potentially could mean I need to look at my steering box in the future (although he didn't seem overly concerned about it at the moment). I drove the 40 mins home and did notice the steering felt a bit strange going around a sharp turn as the return to center didn't feel quite right. I emailed him and he said that return to center is mostly derived from caster and none of that changed but the likely culprit is that the steering linkages are new and tight and likely resisting a bit but should loosen a bit with use. This makes complete sense to me. Nothing seemed adnormal pointing down the road/highway or normal bend in the road cornering.

What I'd like to know is when do you know your steering box is wearing out? What kind of symptoms should I be watching for?

When the time comes, what are good replacements? Mopar or other aftermarket?

Dead spot in otherwise new and solid steering isn't a great sign for the box. When it comes to replacement there are good options, but unfortunately none of them are cheap. Personally, PSC (potentially with hydro assist) is the best option, but it is pricey. There have been reported success with some other modestly cheaper options, but there just aren't that many options out there.

Definitely avoid Cardone and low-end store brand steering boxes like Duralast from Autozone. Maybe take a look at a NAPA's best premium rebuilt. I'd trust a high-end from NAPA before anything from low-end stores like Autozone.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

I used a NAPA to replace the steering box on my 04, so far so good, it is about 150.00 more than the Cardone one

Jerry, I believe Napa's stuff is repackaged Cardone.
Also, stay away from AGR steering boxes.
another option, look on Rockauto, the have supply Lares steering boxes that get decent reviews.

Anybody know if it is a PITA to opt for a 4 bolt, rather than a 3 bolt box?

Yes it would be, the steering box bolts to threaded inserts welded into the frame. You'd have to modify the frame to add that fourth bolt hole and likely need to move one or more of the others too. Not to mention you'd have to be a pretty fair welder too.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

Redhead steering boxes if you're not wanting it tapped for hydro assist.

Warning - they're pricey

I've used Napa boxes on Jeeps with success. NOT with 99-04 SuperDuty, they are crap.

Redheads are a nice box, and they do have a tapped box option.

FWIW, I rebuild my own boxes if the piston and pinion are in good shape.
