remove hood prop from hood ?

Thanks to a moron that damaged my hood, I'll be swapping it out for a new one tomorrow. ('06 TJ) A seemingly simple task except for when it comes to removing one component, the plastic clip that holds the hood prop up against the hood when it is not in use. Does anyone know how to remove this piece of plastic without breaking it?

Funny thing, mine somehow broke and I cannot find it.

^Yeah, when I change the oil in the garage I don't have enough overhead to flip the hood back onto the windshield

Anyone have any ideas?

Us a pick (ie dental or ice) and work your way sound one side at a time slowly prying it out as you go. Had to do this at the junkyard. Slow and Easy, it will come out.
Good luck.

Your hood prop is on the hood itself? Wonder when they did that? Mines on the grill.

Are you sure? The prop (and retainer) on my wife's '00 is mounted to the hood also.

Update for future reference:

1. The universal kit at Autozone does not have the correct part for the TJ hood.

2. To remove the "hood prop retainer piece" use a flat blade screw driver or a "auto door panel clip removal tool" (pictured below) to pry between the clip piece and the thin square piece at the base of the clip. The part that clips onto the hood prop will pull out of the base, and then the base will easily pull out of the hood. It can then be reinstalled in another hood and is just as tight and sturdy as it always was.

Hesher 420 is right. That is how mine came out. One note: there is a square hole in front of the mounting hole that is larger and can easily be mistaken for the clip hole. Don't ask how I know. The correct square hole is behind the bump the larger hole is on and is smaller it accepts the clip perfectly.
