radio swap question

I just purchased a 2005 TJ X. I hate the aftermarket radio that's in it with a passion. I have a radio in a 98 that is now a parts jeep. I am thinking of using the center of the dash because of the shape of the radio. Will I be able to make a harness adapter using the 98 wiring and the aftermarket harness? Just looking for ideas before I spend the day in/under two dashboards.

The radio in your 98 is stock or another aftermarket you like better? I'd venture to say you can adapt any head unit if you want to... I mean power wire, ground, speaker wires, and antenna lead. With or without a proper harness that thing could be wired in.

However, might be better to just get an aftermarket that you don't hate for the newer TJ. Less than $100 nets a few options that will pump more juice into your speakers (cleaner sound) and have features like Bluetooth. My TJ has a Pioneer that was $50 on sale (years ago).

The center bezel from the 98" is not a direct swap, it can be made to fit with a bit of playing around.

If you come to a fork in the road take it.

I was hoping it was, crap. Thanks for that info. The one in there has been coated in bedliner and I wanted to remove it too. Well, I don't want to create more cobbled-together stuff. I guess I'll just get an OEM 2005 radio. The one in there is a JVC with such small buttons and no realistic way to change the station even for the passenger if you are moving. Just one piece of frustration I am over.
Thanks all, I am glad I asked before jumping in.
