Oil Pressure Gauge issues

I did some searches and found a couple of topics on oil pressure gauge issues but I could not find anything exactly like the problem i am having. My Oil pressure gauge works fine at start up and while running from 25mph and up, but when i begin to brake as my speed drops so does my oil pressure. By the time i am at a complete stop my oil pressure gauge is at 0. I had the oil changed just a few hundred miles ago and oil level is fine. Just thought i would see if anyone has any ideas before i spend $40 on the oil pressure sensor. By the way this jeep is new to me, it is a 97 with 4.0 engine and 130,000 miles on it.

thanks,

jw

Isn't the oil pressure gauge just a dummy? I thought it was fake.

the gauge bouncing around would not bother me that much except the check gauges light comes on and beeps every time i slow down and stop. So do you think that the oil pressure sensor is causing my issues?

hook up a mechanical gauge to the stock port...best way to know..if its reading low then you have an issue somewhere...if its reading normal then replace the sensor

one more question. By "stock port" do you mean to get a gauge that is threaded and screw it into the port where the stock oil pressure sensor screws in or am i way off?

yep. if you buy that cheapo oil pressure gauge from the parts store it will have the adapters ect in it that will allow you to screw into that 1/8th npt threaded hole on the block. unscrew the stock sending unit and screw the fittings in..connect the gauge and see what its doing.

got it, ok i will give it a shot and see. So i guess i will have to drive with it on there and then hop out and open the hood and see what it says. It seems like it is reading ok at start up and idle, it just goes crazy after i drive for awhile and then stop.

A dummy? No,it just doesn't display that accurately! I would suggest maybe first hooking it up to a manual gauge to check the pressure. It's probably in need of hopefully just a new oil sensor! Then again... how many miles on engine?Possible oil pump, bearings, etc.

No, early TJ oil pressure gauges like from '97 to probably 2001 or so indicate the true oil pressure. It was after that when the programming was changed to only indicate mid-scale no matter what the engine rpms are so long as the true oil pressure (hidden from the driver) is ok.

So for the OP's and your '97, the gauge is accurate... at least it is if the oil pressure sender is ok.

Jdub36, a bad oil pressure sender is common in early TJs, I would change it and not install a second gauge. My '97 TJ's oil pressure sender went bad within its first two years.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

Thanks Jerry, I might just go ahead and swap it out. I hope that does the trick, after that the solutions seem to get way more complicated and expensive.
