Odd Serpentine Setup

The first time I looked up how a Tj serpentine belt is normally ran around the pulleys I was super confused. None of the images I was seeing were really anything like mine. I am sharing this in case some others are having problems finding how theirs is set up. Fortunately I had some old pictures of how mine is when I replaced the alternator. The other day the bearing in my idle seized while I was driving home and unthreaded the bolt that holds it in place. Then everything shot around my engine bay before shooting out from under me. I had to do some roadside hunting for the spacer that keeps the pulley in alignment with the rest of the belt.

might want to take a moment to fill out your profile so people know what year you have. the 4.0 had at least two different accessory layouts and belt routings. Mine for example has the AC compressor up high on the passenger side, with the alternator down below it.

@freedom_in_4low My garage has all the details on my jeep. Is there another place I should put that info? I am new to the forum thing.

If you complete jeep profile then it is easy access for people. There is a sticky at the top of the section about doing it.

Looks like the standard belt routing for a 4.0L with AC from 2000 through 2006. All TJs with AC prior to 2000 used the belt routing shown below.

@mukluk I have just never seen any pictures of the serpentine set up like mine when doing a search for the images of one. Even my Chilton book had serpentine set ups similar just not quite like it. I was just trying to share it. If it isn't anything new then sorry about posting info that isn't new.

Example of why your Chilton book should go in the garbage and get a 2000 FSM.

No issues with trying to be helpful, I just wanted to make the point that it isn't an odd belt routing per se for the vehicle at hand.

For anybody else running across the thread, the following attachments show the belt routing from the FSM for 00-06 4.0L w/AC, 00-06 4.0L w/o AC, and 97-99 all engines w/o AC. The belt routing used for 2000 and newer TJs with the 2.5L and AC stayed the same as the 97-99 routing already shown above.

And so as not to leave our 2.4L folks out in the cold, routing diagrams for with and w/o AC.

The RHD belt routing isn't in the FSMs as far as I remember. I can post a pic of it later.

Edit: I'm not sure about later RHD but this is what routing is used on 97-99 4.0L. If non A/C an Idler pulley is used in that location.

Another edit: Thought I'd update this with the version I made when somebody wanted to replace the radiator decal...
