Homemade Half Doors?

Hey all! I ran a search but couldn't find anything on the topic. I know someone has had to try it, are there any write ups about it? I've always wanted a set of half doors but never really had the cash to buy them, something else always seemed more important, haha. So what do you guys think? I was thinking of using some wood to make them cause I don't really have the means to make them out of metal cheap. Anyone have any measurements or tips? I figure it should be decently easy. Any ideas on a latch mechanism? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

John

I've seen them made of wood, there's a club around my area and several of the Jeeps run them. They look pretty decent and are plywood I believe.

Here's a pic:

I guess the best way would be to clamp a piece of plywood to the door opening and trace it from the inside, then cut it with a jig saw. You could get a set of factory hinges pretty cheap and bolt them on. That would also allow the use of mirrors. For the latches you would either have to rig something up or buy replacement latches for half doors or soft doors.

...After rereading my description I may have to try this soon. It sounds very doable. You could even add brackets on the inside of the doors to accept uppers.

Yea it seems really easy I'm surprised not many have tried it before. I figure the hinges from the dealer probably wouldn't be that much but again they do charge 15 bucks for the rubber isolators on the tailgate so who knows haha. But yea this definitely sounds like something I'll be doing. I was thinking for the latch mechanism I could use a fence gate type mechanism similar to this

that would just clip onto the door striker. What do you guys think?

If you did it in wood you could very easily wrap some fiberglass matting over it and add the resin and have a fiberglass shell over it. (seen it done to body kits before- not with wood of course)

Hahaha I was just gonna paint them but hey this might be a cool idea. Trying to keep this fairly inexpensive. I was also wondering what might be done for an armrest or something? I could probably just fab up a pad or something that I could screw on top of the doors, who knows. Haha it's times like these where I wish I didn't go to scholl 5 hours away from my Jeep just because I'm getting really antsy and want to start trying to make these.

You may try to do like composite wings on homebuilt aircraft. Use "blue board" Styrofoam (sic) then resin coat a fiberglass covering, works well with wings and very strong if done right. Wont rust, warp, can be painted and modified with latches, armrest and weather strip. Just use the right resin compatible with the foam board. The door frame would be easy to shape with a rasp or knife then coat.

This is crazy..................wooden doors??? I think im gonna have to make one for the passneger side - lol (where my 3 1/2 year old son sits

the one in the pic above does not look like factory hinges to me - Any better pics? I think you could just get some round bar or even all thread and bend it 90degrees and attach that to the plywood with something and use it as the hinge

Bestop used to have those plastic doors...I would assume fiberglass ones would be similar. Not sure why they stopped selling them. Look for hardware for mounting the upper softop for diamondplate doors and soft top door handles, I'm sure it will work for the plywood.
