Help decoding engine serial number from an engine swap

Hey guys,

I would like to ask your help on the following. (apologies if it should be in other forum)

I’m negotiating a 2.5 TJ that had a 4.0 engine swap. The swap has been done by the PO so the current owner is not sure about the engine it has (only knows it has been either from a XJ or ZJ)
The engine number he sent me is 804MX20.
Looking around in the web it seems it can be either a 88 or 98 engine but as the first number clashes I cannot confirm it.
Is there any other way e.g. by the rest of the serial number or by the engine photo, to decode this ?
I’m attaching an engine picture hopping that any of you guys can give me any pointer or ways of decoding this ..

Thanks in advance

804MX20 is the manufacture date, correct ?

The casting date on the right side will tell you the date range and probably the original usage.

53008405: 1991-1995 YJ, XJ, ZJ

3010341, 53010449, 53020569: 1996-1998 TJ, XJ, ZJ (except 1998 ZJ)

53020514, 53020515: 1998 ZJ

53010449AA : 1999-2001 XJ, 1999 TJ

53010327AB, 53010328AB: 1999-2004 WJ & 2000-2006 TJ

Thank your for your inputs.
I currently don't have any access to the jeep as its fair away in my country and only have the build date (plus another identification also sent: 66DCDC3 as part of the engine number) & the engine picture.
I'm hoping to be able to validate this without needing to travel there for this question.

The casting number should be visible just forward of the motor mount, or easily located with a small mirror and flashlight.

On TJ engines you will also find the last eight digits of the VIN the engine was factory fitted to, are etched onto the flat surface that the dipstick support bolts to. It's between the #4 and 5 pistons.
