I know this has probably been discussed before but i have a hard downshift at exactly 30MPH. This happened 10 years ago but i dont recall what it took to fix it. Ideas?..Thanks in advance....

Start with the easy stuff if you're unsure of a cause -- check the ATF level and condition, and use a scanner to see if any fault codes are present or pending.

2003 was the first year of the 42RLE. At 30MPH this would be the 4-3 downshift with Overdrive ON. If Overdrive is OFF, the torque converter is unlocking in 3rd gear at this speed.

Do begin by checking the fluid level and condition. If the fluid and filter have not be changed in the past 30,000 miles, you're probably due.

Though you don't need to go here yet, if the fluid and filter are not the issue, your TJ uses a Transmission Control Module, and they are known to experience memory failure. Hard up and downshifting with the 42RLE is often associated with TCM ('03-'04)/PCM ('05-'06) memory failure. If the hard shift only occurs from cold start (typically parked overnight or longer), it's a TCM/PCM memory issue. If you experience constant hard shifts, there is a mechanical or hydraulic issue that the TCM/PCM can't compensate for.
