getting beat by another TJ on highway

A buddy had an identically equiped TJ to mine, 4.0, 5 speed, 33", 3.73's. His is a 98, mine is a 2000. He can run down the highway and hold 70 quite easily, of course flat ground and no wind. I can't do that and I don't like being beat. Everything on my engine is stock but he has TBS spacer and cold air induction system, but most of you guys say that doesn't do a thing for you at the rpm range that we normally run which is under 3000 rpm. My 5th gear ratio is .78 and his is .79, if the specs on this forum are correct. So, what the heck is the deal? Yes, I know that I need to re-gear and that will come in time but I think that I am comparing 'apples to apples' but I don't like mine!

Perhaps he was in 4th gear?

He cheated and threw his into 4th.Honestly,you can't hold 70mph on the highway with flat road?I've got a 98' with 3.73 gears,5 speed and 35's and I hit 90mph when I was testing out my new speedo gear.90 is freakin scarey with a lifted Jeep and 35's.

My friend had a 98 with 31's and 3.73 and I had a 04 with 31's and 3.07 and I could keep up with him no problems. I am not sure the reason why, I was confused by that also

I had no problem keeping up with 80-85 on the highway even with a little incline in 5th. I was running a bone stock '97 SE.

When is the last time you had a tune up? Seems like something is wrong if you cant hit 70mph with that setup.

I could hit 96mph stock, now with the 31" mts it tops out at 80mph. 3.07 gears bring the suck.

Sold the 98 TJ Sahara. Buying another Jeep soon!

Makes no sense. I know my 04 is stronger than my 01 .. just seems to pull better. They should be the same. But in your case the 2000 is stronger than the 98 and should show it

4.0L I-6 242 cu in - 1997-1999
* 181 hp @ 4,600 RPM
* 222 ft/lbs @ 2,800 RPM
* OHV
* Sequential port fuel injection
* 2 valves per cylinder
* Compression ratio = 8.80:1

4.0L I-6 242 cu in - 2000-2006
* 190 hp @ 4,600 RPM
* 235 ft/lbs @ 3,200 RPM
* OHV
* Sequential port fuel injection
* 2 valves per cylinder
* Compression ratio = 8.80:1
* Distributor-less ignition
* Redesigned cylinder head
* Redesigned 2 piece exhaust manifold

It makes no sense to me either. He does get his peak torque at a little lower rpm that I do. I am just scratching my bald head. I am not saying that I want to run that fast all the time but when we are driving down the road together, it just ain't right that he can beat me like that. Do any of you think that there is merit to the TBS or the cold air intake? It shouldn't have any effect at that rpm range, should it?
